Hills Hoist, rotary clothesline

Who here used to swing on the old Hills Hoist? Or should I ask who got yelled at by their parents every time they swung on the rotary clotheslines? We got into a lot of trouble swinging on the hills hoist, didn't we? However, the hills hoist remained intact and lasted for years! Who still has a hills hoist?

Remember the 1st one my parents had very well. My brother & l used a, then, empty 44 gallon fuel drum & jumped off this while holding onto an arm. Our best though (approx 1955), was when l tied a rope from the end of an arm to the centre post & kept spinning until the arm was bent towards the ground. I think l had a tag rope on the end of an arm running around the line to keep it rotating. The rope tightened as it wound around the centre post pulling the arm down. My father often told the story (laughingly), about how he went to the Hills Hoist retailer who wouldn't believe that, (quote) 'two small boys could do that damage to their hoists.' I may have been 5y.o & my brother 3y.o.

We had one of these when we first married in the homes we rented but don't remember any of our girls doing this.
