Born James Barrie Sikking on 5 March 1934, in Los Angeles, California, he was named after the famed author of Peter Pan, JM Barrie.

His early life was shaped by his mother Sue's spiritual journey, which led her to found the Unity by the Sea Church in Santa Monica after surviving a nearly fatal car accident.

His father, Art, joined her in the ministry, and together, they fostered a nurturing environment that eventually supported Sikking's artistic aspirations.

Sikking's foray into acting led him to a variety of roles on stage, television, and film. However, it was his portrayal of Lt Howard Hunter on the groundbreaking series Hill Street Blues that catapulted him to fame.

The show, which debuted to modest ratings amidst a Hollywood dual strike, eventually found its footing and became a critical darling.

His performance earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama in 1984, a testament to his talent and the show's impact on television.

‘It was a lot of hard work, but everybody loved it and that shows. When you have the people who are involved in the creation, manufacture—whatever you want to call it—who are really into it and enjoy doing it, you’re going to get a good product,’ Sikking said.

‘We always had three different stories running through (each episode), which means you had to listen and you had to pay attention because everything was important.’

Sikking's versatility as an actor was further showcased in his role as Dr David Howser on the series Doogie Howser, MD, where he played the supportive yet often bewildered father of a teenage medical prodigy.

Beyond his iconic television roles, Sikking's career included appearances on classic shows such as Rawhide, Bonanza, Starsky & Hutch, The Rockford Files, Brooklyn South, Turnabout, General Hospital, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

On the silver screen, Sikking worked alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Frank Sinatra in Von Ryan’s Express (1965) and Elvis Presley in Charro! (1969).

His filmography also includes roles in Ordinary People (1980), Scorpio (1973), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), The Pelican Brief (1993), Fever Pitch (2005), and Made of Honour (2008).
