High Tank Toilets​

Who remembers using those old ‘high tank’ toilets? You had to pull the chain and hope for the best. It was when the outhouse was the norm, and indoor plumbing was a luxury! Do you have any memories of using these old-fashioned toilet tanks? Share them here.

Yes I do, we lived in the country and we had a toilet outside that you had to pull the chain to flush.

Gosh,yes! And every spider on the planet lived on or near it! I also remember the “dunny man”! He used to come and collect the pans from the outside thunder boxes. He was an enormous bloke. An absolute mountain of a man and he would always give us a quiet chuckle because he was always accompanied by his two very spoiled miniature poodles,Blossom and Petal and he had a very high voice. He would also take the pan,regardless of whether it was in use or not! I remember my dad nearly falling down laughing when my mum was in the toilet and he turned up,whipping out the used pan and popping another in whilst singing out to mum…good morning,Mrs h! Take your time! lol…she was mortified!

Yes I have memories of this. a friend of my mum had one and frogs used to jump out of it when you pulled the chain, as a 5 year old I was terrified of going to this toilet.

Sure do. Had one in the out back dunny. We also had the usual system in the bathroom as well.
