The situation could have turned dire, but Mr Vaili refused to be a victim. Instead, he literally took matters into his own hands. He chased down two of the teenagers, managing to pin one of them to the ground with a well-executed spear tackle, a move that would make any rugby coach proud.
'I had him pinned here with his face, and the second one's come with the knife,' Mr Vaili recounted to 9News, describing the tense moments of the encounter.
His wife Angela's composure matched the grandfather's bravery during the ordeal. She recalled the terrifying moment when one of the teenagers, armed with a knife, turned on her. The weapon's presence escalated the danger, but the Vailis stood their ground, protecting their family and home.
Meanwhile, two other teenagers were waiting in what was reported to be a stolen getaway car. While three of the youths remain at large, the 15-year-old boy who Mr Vaili apprehended was arrested by the police, who arrived on the scene within minutes of the incident.
The young offender now faces five charges and is set to appear before the Cairns Children's Court. The community has commended law enforcement's swift response and the bravery of the Vail family.
