A Perth father, Nick Mitchell, was left deeply concerned for his family's health after receiving a distressing text from HelloFresh.
The message arrived unexpectedly and warned that the leafy greens in his latest meal kit could be contaminated with Listeria, a harmful bacterium.
The text urged customers to dispose of the affected products immediately.
The message read: 'Our supplier has just advised, as of (09/09/2024), there may be a food health safety issue in the mixed salad or baby spinach that you received in your most recent HelloFresh box that can be harmful if consumed.’
‘Please discard the product. If you have already consumed this recipe and are concerned, please contact us or seek medical advice.'
Listeria thrives in soil, water, and animal feces and can lead to serious health issues, including fevers, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
While many people may experience mild symptoms, Listeria can be particularly dangerous for certain groups, including pregnant women, individuals over 65, and those with weakened immune systems. In some cases, it can even be life-threatening.
The potential contamination was reported to only affect HelloFresh deliveries in Western Australia.
More than ten Reddit users echoed Mr Mitchell's concerns, with some reporting feeling ill and others worried about the delayed onset of Listeria symptoms, which can take up to a month to manifest.
In response to the scare, HelloFresh issued a statement to PerthNow confirming that the potential contamination was limited to their third-party supplier's Mixed Salad and Baby Spinach, which are distributed in the WA market.
They reassured customers that immediate action was taken to inform those who received the implicated ingredients in their meal kits between 5 September and 8 September 2024.
The company emphasised that only the mixed leaves and baby spinach were at risk and that all other ingredients in the deliveries were safe to consume.
As a gesture of goodwill, HelloFresh announced they would offer a $5 credit for each bag of the affected baby spinach or mixed salad.
