Having a hard time picking up the perfect watermelon? Here’s an easy hack!

We all know how frustrating it is to buy a watermelon, only to get it home and find that it’s not as ripe as we’d hoped.

But did you know that there’s a little-known tip that will help you choose perfectly ripe watermelons every time?

You read that right, folks! A watermelon farmer has recently revealed the key to picking the perfect fruit, emphasising that you don't need to be an expert to know that the watermelon is fully ripe.

Sharing the tip to Australian parenting network Mum Central, the farmer said all you need to do is to check the width between the green lines on the fruit.

The wider the gap, the riper the watermelon.

One Mum Central staff member claimed that she tried the hack herself and revealed the results of her "watermelon purchasing experiment"...

She said: "I asked him [the farmer] what was the secret to finding a good watermelon, he said to make sure the dark green lines are two fingers width APART."

"When we got watermelons yesterday, I put that to the test and cut the watermelon up. IT WAS DELICIOUS."

"Glad to know a simple way of finding a good watermelon. I thought I'd pass the info along to our friends!!"

And if you're still not convinced, you can always try the 'slap test' - give the watermelon a good whack and see if it makes a deep 'hollow' sound. If it does, that means it's ripe and juicy and perfect for eating,

The tip, which was shared on Facebook, has gone viral, amassing more than 1200 shares and over 440 comments from stunned users.

One person wrote: "Love learning these little tips - thanks so much."

"We got the best watermelon Friday from using the two-finger rule!" another exclaimed.

Watermelon is a delicious and refreshing fruit that is perfect for summertime. While watermelon is available year-round, it is at its peak from December to May. When selecting a watermelon, look for one that is uniform in shape and has a dull, rather than shiny, appearance. The watermelon should also feel heavy for its size.

If you grow your own watermelon or have access to fresh watermelons, you may want to store some for later. Here are a few tips on how to store watermelon at home:

1. Store watermelon in a cool, dry place.

2. Cut watermelon should be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator.

3. Whole watermelons can be stored at room temperature for up to a week or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

4. Freeze watermelon for longer storage. Cut watermelon into slices or cubes and store in freezer bags. Whole watermelons can also be frozen, but will be more difficult to thaw and eat.
