Hand Drill

Back in the 1950s, before power tools were common, the humble hand drill was the apprentice’s best mate. Hours could be spent cranking away, drilling holes for wooden plugs in brick walls—sometimes taking days to finish a job. Some even had the ‘fancy’ two-speed gear models, a real step up from the single-speed classics. Many still keep theirs tucked away in the shed, handed down from Dad or Grandad, reminders of a time when patience and elbow grease did all the work.

Ive still got my father's one
He gave it to me back in the mid 60s in my very first tool set. And I still use it for certain projects

We still have my father's big, half inch chuck hand drill, plus a more recently purchased quarter inch chuck unit. The pride of the collection, however, is Grandfather's Bit and Brace unit, with an extensive set of drill bits.

None of these get used very often, but in some situations I find they are still the 'go to' tool to have.
