Halloween display at Woolworths slammed as “inappropriate”

Following the post of a mum on Facebook, a supermarket was forced to act after the store’s Halloween display was deemed “too scary”.

The staff at Woolworths can create their own store displays for different occasions such as Easter, Halloween or Christmas to help their customers get in the festive spirit.

However, a Woolworths store has removed its Halloween decorations after Bec Tabinor complained about the display. She claims they were “not appropriate” for children.

“The decorations are not appropriate; can’t you just dedicate a spot or something? It's great you have quiet hour, but this is not helping at all,” the shopper captioned the photo.

“Anyone else struggle with their kids when the decorations come out? Mine said, ‘let’s leave and go to IGA instead; they don’t have scary decorations’.”

The photo of the decorations was shared on the supermarket’s Facebook page, which showed a plastic skeleton in a black hooded cloak with fake cobwebs.

The post gained attention among other shoppers, and most of them found it humorous.

“That‘s not even scary … my eight-year-old would laugh,” one user commented.

“I’m sorry, but this is a joke,” another said.

Some even added sarcasm, “It's almost like it's an annual festival that comes round every year at the same time....”

“My daughter was always terrified of Father Christmas; maybe Christmas should have been cancelled for the last 11 years just to suit her,” continued one shopper with another sarcastic response.

There are also a few who agreed with the mum’s concerns, saying, “I think a dedicated section would be better… I also think it's a bit tasteless and inappropriate.”

Woolworths replied to the post by commenting, “Hi Bec, thanks for your patience, and we apologise for the delayed response. We're sorry to hear your concerns about the Halloween decorations in one of our stores. We'd like to share this with our Store Management Team for their immediate awareness.”

The store then proceeded to ask for details like date, time, and store location to take necessary action.

Woolworths told news.com.au the store had “amended the display” after receiving the woman’s feedback.

“Our store teams enjoy helping customers celebrate a range of events throughout the year, and we encourage them to get in the festive spirit by decorating their store in the lead up to celebrations like Halloween,’ the spokesperson said.

“We want all customers to feel comfortable and welcomed in our stores, and we appreciate this customer's feedback on the decorations at her local store.”
