When someone asks a tourist to name a beach in Australia, they're likely to think of Bondi Beach.

However, according to a ranking of the world’s best beaches, an unexpected destination from the New South Wales region is also worthy of being on any Australian tourist's bucket list.

Move over Bondi, Hyams Beach is now in the global spotlight. The beach, only a three-hour drive south of Sydney, placed at number ten in Enjoy Travel’s Annual 50 Best Beaches in the World List.

What makes Hyams Beach so special?

For starters, it's home to some of the whitest sand in the world and crystal-clear ocean water. It's also linked to Jervis National Park, which boasts a 2km trail–known as the Bird Spotter’s Walk–that birdwatchers can enjoy.

Visitors can also stop by the Jervis Bay Marine Park on its southern shores. The marine park is a haven for dolphins, sea lions and penguins.

While there, anyone can swim and snorkel in the beautiful waters or relax and enjoy the scenic view.

But this isn't the only Aussie beach to make the list.

Queensland's Whitehaven Beach came in at fifth place. This spot is renowned for its immaculate, 98 per cent pure silica sand.

Sixteen spots down the list is Turquoise Bay in Western Australia. As the name implies, you'll be spoilt with some of the most unbelievably dazzling turquoise waters, perfect for snorkelling.

At the top of the list is White Beach in Port Barton, Philippines. What makes this particular beach extra special is that it can only be accessed by boat. It comes with rows of towering palm trees, making it a truly picturesque setting for a day in the sun.

Other beaches on the list are Cabo San Juan Beach in Colombia, named second best in the world, Jalousie Beach in St Lucia took the third spot, and Kendwa Beach in Zanzibar ranking in fourth place.

I used to live down there at Huskisson just up the road from Hyams Beach and the beaches are just beautiful. The whole of Jervis Bay is gorgeous. I can never understand why people go overseas like Bali when we have so many beautiful beaches in Australia. At certain times of the year I used to watch the Fairy Penguins come ashore and nest at Jervis Bay. They were safe there with no harm from anyone or anything.
