Grocer shops
Remember going to the grocery store to get your weekly food supplies? Before supermarkets, there were grocer shops that were independently owned and where every customer was known by name and served individually behind a counter. There were no shopping trolleys or plastic bags; everything was wrapped in paper and placed in cardboard boxes to be delivered by a horse or delivery man. Oh, those were the days.

Ours was a short walk up the street & around the corner. I would be sent there regularly for bits & pieces between main shop days. The loose biscuits were down the back of the shop in square tin boxes & the owner would put these one at a time into a brown paper bag. Occasionally we'd have a treat for dessert. I'd go for a block of trio ice-cream for 2 shillings & 6 pence, which the shopkeeper wrapped in newspaper. The hardest shop was taking the empty 4 gallon kerosene drum there to be filled & then carry it home again. On one trip, in the rain. The Telephone box was outside the shop. A service station eventually replaced this store.
