Government provides disaster recovery payments to flood-hit residents

As the floodwaters recede in Far North Queensland, the daunting task of recovery and rebuilding begins. For many residents, the financial burden of this process can be overwhelming.

However, the Australian Government has stepped in to provide much-needed support through the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment and Disaster Recovery Allowance.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that applications for this financial aid will open at 2 pm (AEST) for those directly impacted by the devastating floods.

This is a crucial lifeline for those grappling with the aftermath of this natural disaster, so it's essential to understand how to access this support.

The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment is a one-off payment of $1000 per eligible adult and $400 per eligible child. This financial aid is available for those who have suffered a serious injury or have a severely damaged or destroyed home as a result of the flooding.

On the other hand, the Disaster Recovery Allowance provides up to 13 weeks of federal income support. This allowance is designed to assist eligible employees or sole traders who experience a loss of income due to the floods.

These funds are open to people who live and work in the Cairns, Cassowary Coast, Cook, Douglas, Hope Vale, Mareeba, Tablelands, Wujal Wujal, and Yarrabah local government areas.

Cairns is one of the most devastated areas in Far North Queensland due to Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

The deluge has affected a vast 250km area, stretching from Cooktown in the north to Innisfail in the south.

According to the Queensland Police and Fire Service, State Emergency Service (SES), and the Cairns Navy base HMAS Cairns, they have successfully evacuated 300 people from communities such as Yorkies Knob and Holloways Beach.

Despite the severity of the situation, authorities have confirmed that there have been no fatalities or serious injuries. You can read more about this story here.

The relentless rainfall has rendered airborne rescue and supply missions impossible, with heavy rain and low clouds grounding helicopters crucial for reaching stranded residents.

In addition to Australian citizens, equivalent financial assistance will also be made available to eligible New Zealand citizens.

The Importance of Preparedness

While we can't prevent natural disasters like floods, we can prepare for them. Having an emergency plan, obtaining adequate insurance, and staying informed about potential risks can make a significant difference when disaster strikes.

In the wake of the floods, it's a good time to review your preparedness measures and make any necessary adjustments.

In conclusion, the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment and Disaster Recovery Allowance are vital resources for flood-affected Queenslanders.
