Global shortage hits Australia as Coles and Woolworths fight to meet demand

In the fast-moving world of food trends, a familiar favourite has suddenly taken centre stage, sparking excitement among snack enthusiasts and sweet tooths alike.

A new global craze has sent demand soaring, leaving supermarket shelves struggling to keep up and eager shoppers on the hunt.

But worry not, members of the Seniors Discount Club—Australia's major supermarkets have stepped in with welcome news to de-escalate the situation.

The 'Dubai chocolate' trend, which features a thick chocolate bar filled with pistachio cream and kataifi, has taken social media by storm, particularly on social media, where creators have been sharing their indulgent experiences with the world.

The trend, which began with Fix Dessert Chocolatier's creation in the UAE, has now become a global phenomenon.

Supermarkets and specialty stores offer an array of pistachio-flavored products, from spreads to ice cream.

However, this surge in popularity has led to a significant impact on the pistachio market.

According to Giles Hacking of global nut trader CG Hacking, pistachio kernel prices have steeply increased, jumping from $12 to $16 per pound in just one year.

'The pistachio world is basically tapped out at the moment,' he said.

The pistachio world is feeling the pressure, with supplies running low due to a combination of high demand and a disappointing harvest, particularly in the United States, which is the leading exporter of the nut.

California, known for its vast pistachio orchards, reported a drop of up to 20 per cent in its supply over the past year.

Meanwhile, Iran, another major producer, has been exporting significantly more pistachios to meet the insatiable appetite of the UAE market.

This has led to some international retailers imposing limits on the number of pistachio products customers can purchase, with even luxury chocolatiers like Lindt restricting sales.

Despite these challenges, Coles and Woolworths have provided a glimmer of hope for Australian consumers.

Coles has assured customers that it has a 'great supply of pistachios available' and is committed to offering a diverse range of pistachio-flavored items.

Woolworths, too, has confirmed that its stocks have been largely unaffected by the global shortage, ensuring that shoppers can continue to enjoy their favourite pistachio treats without disruption.

This news relieves many, especially those who have developed a taste for the nutty delicacy.

It's a testament to the resilience and foresight of Australian retailers in the face of global supply chain challenges.

As we navigate these nutty times, we must remember the value of supporting local producers and diversifying our sources to ensure a steady supply of our favourite foods.

So, while the world may be facing a pistachio predicament, Australia seems well-positioned to weather the storm.

Whether you're a fan of the viral Dubai chocolate or enjoy a handful of roasted pistachios as a snack, you can rest assured that Coles and Woolworths are doing their best to keep the shelves stocked.

In other news, Woolworths and Coles have expanded their pistachio-flavoured product ranges in response to growing customer interest.

Pistachio has recently emerged as a popular flavour trend across Australia, appearing in various food items. You can read more about it here.
