Get fresher, cheaper fruit and vegetables from local greengrocers!

Many of us focus on eating fresh fruits and vegetables when it comes to staying healthy. But with the increasing cost of living and high inflation, it can be difficult to buy produce without overspending.

But don't worry; you don't have to sacrifice quality or variety just to save some money.

A smart Australian shopper shared her secret to finding incredible deals on fresh produce without shopping at big supermarkets like Coles, Woolworths, or ALDI. Instead, she opts for local greengrocers, where she can get more value for her money.

The Melbourne native shared her secret with fellow budget-conscious shoppers on the She's on the Money Facebook page, stating: 'Just a reminder of how cheap it is to shop at your local fruit shop. All of this for $26! All while supporting local business.'

The shopper shared that there were bags of bananas, broccoli, and capsicum for only $2 each at her local greengrocer, Bigfields Fresh Market, at Summerhill Shopping Centre in Reservoir, Melbourne.

Fellow thrifty enthusiasts flooded the post with their finds, recommending their favourite small grocers from all over the country, where they can purchase fresh produce at a fraction of the cost of major supermarkets.

Some people also shared their experience purchasing affordable fresh produce. One mother only spent $50 on her shopping trip at the Dandenong markets in Victoria. Source: Facebook

One shopper responded by sharing: 'Love me a Saturday morning farmers market! Always so much cheaper than the grocery store and usually fresher.'

Many echoed this sentiment, noting how they never spend more than $30 a week on fresh fruit and vegetables when shopping locally.

In addition to being more budget-friendly, shopping at local greengrocers has another benefit: the quality of the produce is often superior compared to what you find in supermarkets.

This means the fruits and vegetables you buy from these small neighbourhood businesses last much longer in your fridge or pantry.

Another shopper opted for bags and boxes of vegetables and paid only $78, a significant saving compared to what she would have spent, exceeding $170, if she had purchased the same items from Woolworths. Source: Facebook

This is because these greengrocers obtain their supplies directly from nearby farms, enabling them to offer fresher and tastier items.

By reducing the distance between the source and your shopping bag, they minimise the potential waste caused by spoilage.

For those worried about the price still being too high even at local fruit and veggie shops, one shopper recommended a handy tip: 'To the people saying their local fruit/veg shop is more expensive than in supermarkets, mine can be too. I just make sure to buy what is in season/on special.'

Adelaide fresh fruiterers in Morphett Vale are amazing. They buy from the markets every single morning. Their turnover is super fast due to the quality. Nothing is stored very long at all. Never find anything bruised, soft, bendy etc. Prices are comparable to everywhere else. What is dearer than supermarkets has other items that are cheaper. And a great range. It lasts and lasts after purchase as its such good quality.

My closest farmers market is 30 kms away and twice I've been, the leafy veg has sadly lasted only a couple of days before not edible.

Our suburb of 40,000 does not have a greengrocer.. Therefore I go without or end up throwing excess out.

In Brisbane, check out T-Bones in Aspley. Excellent value, cheap meat, vegetables, cheeses, pantry items. Like Coco's but a bit smaller and tidier.

Farmers Markets are fantastic for fresh produce, but I stopped going a few years ago. Too many choices that I couldn't resist, and we couldn't eat all of it every week and sometimes items couldn't keep for a week. Markets are never cheaper, just fresher.
These days, I only buy what we need and eat, then buy more when that's gone.

Yes, you can save more by going to the fresh fruit shops, my daughter lives in Melbourne and she does it all the time she doesn’t do her fruit and veg shopping in the supermarkets and she has a large family, so she saves lots of 💰 🍎
