The holidays are coming up, which means many of us will once again be travelling abroad to spend time with family and friends.
But as much as we love jetting off to distant shores, there's one aspect of air travel that we definitely don't enjoy – the dehydrating effects it has on our skin!
Whether you're taking a long-haul flight or a short trip, it pays to be mindful of your skin while in the air to ensure you touch down looking good and feeling fresh. Luckily, we have some tips from an expert that will help keep your skin hydrated and healthy during your travels.
Erin Docherty from Mamamia is a beauty editor who recently took a long flight overseas. To avoid her skin drying out and looking dull, she came up with an easy skincare routine using just a few products that made all the difference.
So, to save you the skin-related horrors, Erin has pulled together a team of her MVPs (most valuable products) that just help her skin look and feel nice – even after sitting on a plane for hours on end. Here are her top picks:
Go-To Prep Step Hydrating Face Mist - $29 @ Mecca
The first (and probably one of the most important) steps is to have a reliable mist spray on hand.
'I spritzed this on my face A LOT during the flight. I was originally going to bring my Avene Thermal Water Mist - which is one of my faves - but I had the big baton-like bottle, and Go-To's Prep Step was just way easier to chuck in my bag,' said Erin.
'It soothed, calmed and refreshed my skin throughout the flight and was the perfect foundation for the slew of hydrating serums, oils, and creams I absolutely piled on my face. Smells nice too.'
La Roche-Posay Cicaplast B5 Serum - $65.95 @ La Roche Posay website
And then, it's time for your skin's first layer of hydration. (Yes, there will be a few of these to come...)
'I tried this newbie right before I left and loved it, so it was a no-brainer to bring it along for the ride,' said the beauty guru. 'I loved how it was instantly hydrating, non-sticky and fast absorbing - just a very good hydrating serum that does what it promises.'
CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream - $38.99 @ Chemist Warehouse
'Have you tried this yet? Ooft. You gotta. It's another new launch I can't get off my face,' Erin shared.
'This beautiful demi-matte formula from CeraVe is part of their new range, and it feels like an actual velvety dream on your skin. It's lovely. Thick but confusingly lightweight, it instantly smoothed my skin and made it feel comfy and happy.'
La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 Balm - $19.95 @ Chemist Warehouse
When she feels like she still needs more hydration, she uses this thick balm (sometimes, she layers one on top of the other).
She said: 'It locks everything in without making your face feel sticky. It's my absolute favourite, and I talk about it way too much, but hey - you can't blame me. The stuff just works!'
Lanolips 101 Ointment Multipurpose Superbalm - $18.95 @ Sephora
Of course, we can't forget lip care. 'My lips are always dry, but especially when I'm on a plane - the A/C literally just sucks every last drop outta them. So I usually have a few thick lip balms on rotation,' said Erin.
'I switched between this OG Lanolips 101 Ointment and another Lanolips number (the special edition Messina collaboration one) when I was flying. I like them because the formulas are really thick, and the hydration and comfort factor lasts.'
She also suggests slathering it over any other dry patches on your skin, such as elbows and cuticles.
So, there you have it! A fairly comprehensive in-flight skincare routine if we do say so ourselves, but looking good at the end of a long-haul flight was always going to be a tall order!
Next time you're preparing to travel, make sure to keep these products in mind. Your skin will thank you for it.
Do you have any more tips or products to add to the list? A few of these items are definitely on the pricier side, so if anyone has any ideas for staying fresh on a flight without breaking the bank, let us know in the comments!
