Genius or lazy? ALDI shopper’s basket “hack” draws flak online

An Aldi shopper who shared her “basket hack” on a popular Facebook group was flooded with criticism from fellow members, calling out her hack for being “lazy” and “inconsiderate”, both to other shoppers and store employees.

During her grocery run, the customer found that she had no available coins to pay to borrow a trolley in-store, so she opted to use a basket instead. And since there was only one basket left in the rack, she decided to bring along the basket stand with her, holding it by the handle as a makeshift pull-along trolley.

“The universe decided to take matters in its hands and provided me with an opportunity,” the woman wrote in her Facebook post.

However, not everyone was amazed by the basket “hack”.

Some people pointed out that what she did was very “inconsiderate” to the store staff, seeing that they now have to go around and pick up baskets because the basket stand is ‘missing’.

A retail employee also commented and said that the woman was simply adding more work to the staff who already have so much on their plate.

A third person implied that people may start taking the baskets out and dumping them on the floor just to use the basket stand as a trolley. “Also, I hope you put it back along with any baskets that we’re waiting to be put in the stand,” they added.

And since the supermarket has only introduced the use of baskets in-store just last year, other shoppers were worried that this “hack” may drive Aldi to remove them from their branches.

“If equipment provided for customers’ ease is used incorrectly, it will be taken away with no second thought. Please don’t do this stuff and think that you’re a genius, you’re actually just being selfish, lazy and very inconsiderate of the staff,” said one shopper.

But not everyone went to gang up on the woman. Some people came to her defence, saying that the basket hack was pretty reasonable given her circumstances.

One person said: “Good on you. If there’s nothing left to hold your groceries, why not?”

Meanwhile, others added that they would have done the same if there were no trolleys available in-store.

What do you think? Was she wrong to use the basket stand as a trolley, or was she acting perfectly reasonably? Let us know in the comments below!

I've not been in an Aldi that has baskets. If you can't get a trolley why not just put your purchases straight into the bags that you must have brought with you? At least then you would be sure that you had the where withal to carry your purchases home. I've seen plenty of people do this with no problems.

where were all the baskets? had staff not collected them after the buyer left.
I have worked in a supermarket and it is not always possible at busy times to keep the baskets stocked. The baskets can stack up at registers very quickly. I have carried large stacks of baskets on many occasions as the basket holder has been taken by a customer for their own use.

totally get that, but then many different places, I've been too, at different times, there are rarely any baskets, they are all sitting at the checkout. Just makes it hard for everyone. Though I wouldn't take the trolley!
