Gardening Hacks

Hey folks, those new recyclable containers are good for more than food! They are usually made from sugar cane trash or potato, for example, and make excellent planters. Just poke some holes through the bases, poking from the Inside to the Outside, so the lips of the holes face downwards (don't want to prevent good drainage with the tiny lips facing upwards into the soil), fill with potting mix and plant a seed or two. Square takeaway food containers hold more than one seedling. Cups are good for single seeds. When ready to plant, dig a hole big enough to accommodate the container and plant the lot, as the container will break down, and it saves you the problems of disturbing the roots. The takeaway boxes we get from our local Club are used to cultivate about 4 seedlings, and will sometimes start to break down even before planting, so keep that in mind when putting the containers onto any surface while germinating seeds.

We save seeds from produce bought at our local weekend markets, and use the seeds to grow our own herbs, capsicums, chillies and more. Soak your dried seeds in water overnight to speed up germination.

I vouch for this tip! :) Brilliant way to reuse containers too.
