FYI - Did you know that - WIFI Extenders Cut the Internet Speed down in 1/2...???

Yes, standard WIFI extenders often cut the speed by roughly half because they must use the same bandwidth to both receive the signal from the router and rebroadcast it to devices. This creates a "store and forward" process that reduces the available bandwidth for both the router and the extender. While extenders can expand your coverage area, alternative solutions like a mesh network or wired access points provide better performance.

How WIFI - Extenders Reduce Speed

  • Bandwidth division:
A standard extender has to split its wireless capacity between communicating with your main router and broadcasting to your devices. This means the total available bandwidth is used for both tasks, effectively halving the speed for connected devices.
  • Shared frequencies:
If the extender uses the same frequency band to talk to the router as it does to talk to your devices, this significantly impacts speed. This is because it can't receive and transmit at the same time on the same channel, so it has to alternate between the two, which causes a speed drop.
  • How to get better performance

    • Mesh network:
Mesh systems use multiple nodes that work together, often providing better performance and seamless handoffs between nodes. They are a more modern and effective alternative to extenders.

    • Wired connections:
If possible, use a wired connection to extend your network. Many extenders have an Ethernet port that allows them to connect to the router via a cable. This eliminates the wireless backhaul, which avoids the speed loss associated with a wireless extender.
    • Powerline adapters:
These use your home's electrical wiring to transmit data. You can plug one adapter into an outlet near your router and connect it with an Ethernet cable, then plug the other adapter into an outlet where you need more coverage.

      • Relocate the router:
      • Before buying anything, try repositioning your existing router to a more central, elevated, and open location in your home to maximize its natural reach.
