From the Experts: OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER

Note from the Editor:
This article was written for the SDC by psychologist and member @Jan A. Jan A. works part-time, taking on clients under the Medicare Mental Health Care Plans. She works with people of all ages, from children to seniors!

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition characterised by repetitive, ritualistic behaviours and thoughts. Sufferers feel obliged to engage in specific actions because they believe something terrible will happen if they do not. The behaviours become problematic when they interfere with the person’s everyday life and functions. For example, it is a healthy practice to wash one’s hands after activities such as cleaning or gardening. However, when a person washes their hands every 10 minutes because they fear they (or a loved one) will become fatally ill if they do not, then that behaviour enters the realm of OCD.

When the black dog creeps in l start cleaning more than l normally would. I do the same jobs every day. But when the black dog has a hold l do more house work than needed. My brain is like a unturned radio it never stops changing thoughts.
A few members in the family say l have OCD it's not funny at all. It's my way of coping with stress, anxiety and upsets. My heart goes out to people who have uncontrollable OCD.
Kind regards to all Vicki

I’ve heard jokes made about people with OCD but to those who are genuinely assessed with the condition, there’s nothing funny about it. Also affecting those who live with a person with OCD. Live can be hellish for all. 😞

Very very true nothing funny about it. It is really because you feel you have no control and what your OCD is it feels like it's the only thing you can control.

Oh bless you my husband is the same. He keeps things any little thing. You never know when l will need that. He has a habit of lining objects up. It drives me crazy 🤣 but l don't say anything, because it is his little thing and l would not change him.
Kind regards Vicki
