Note from the Editor:

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly ‘Multiple Personality Disorder’ or ‘Split Personalities’, comprises the presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states (known as ‘alters’) that recurrently take control of a person’s thinking and behaviour. The person may or may not remember what has happened during the times an alter takes over. The different personalities have their individual identity, memory and consciousness. They may or may not be aware of each other’s existence.

This condition is very rare. Most psychotherapists will never have seen a patient with DID. It is estimated that less than 1% of the population has DID symptoms.
