Autism (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder affecting how a person thinks, behaves and interacts with the world.

In the mildest form of ASD, the effects do not interfere with a person being able to live their life, although they may be limited in their career choices. Along the spectrum, effects can increase in severity to the point where the person is non-verbal and needs to be in care.

In Australia, the incidence is estimated to be 1 in 15, but it may be more frequent.

This article will concentrate on autism in its mildest form, formerly regarded as a separate condition previously known as Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) but now considered a form of autism (ASD). This form is much less recognisable as autism, and many people do not realise they have it. The condition tends to be genetic and is likely to be elsewhere in the family. For a GP or clinician, it is not easy to detect, especially if interactions are brief.
