However, a recent incident left many poolgoers shaking their heads in disbelief.
An anonymous man was caught on camera performing a personal act far from appropriate for a public setting.
The video, which recently made rounds online, showed the man giving himself a thorough wash in a children's pool, much to the dismay of onlookers.
The scene unfolded at the Memorial Park pool in Palmerston North in New Zealand.
The man, clad in grey swimwear, was filmed bending over in the knee-high water and lathering up with soap.
He continued to tend to himself, oblivious to the children playing near the children's pool.
The footage also captured the witnesses' shock.
'Bro, it's not a bath,' one swimmer exclaimed.
'Oi, he's washing his f****** a**!' another screamed in disgust.
'For f***'s sake. Alright, kids, get out of the pool,' a parent commanded.
The reactions in the comments section were a mix of disbelief and concern.
One woman recounted how she fell ill after sharing a spa pool with someone who bathed in it.
'Within two days, I was severely sick with shakes and vomiting. The hospital told me I had an infection in the blood and asked me where I had been,' the woman shared.
'What's wrong with this bloke? No common sense and clearly no running water at home,' another asked.
'This is my favourite pool to take my kids to. Why is no one saying anything?' a parent shared.
Despite some people's disgust, not all responses were critical of the man's actions.
Some users pointed out the double standards when it comes to pool hygiene.
'I mean, isn't it normal to shower/wash with soap, etc., after a swim anyway?' a person asked in curiosity.
'It's OK for kids with stink a**** to swim in a chlorinated pool but not OK for a man to clean himself after a swim? I've heard children laugh about taking a p*** in the same pool I watched another child drink from.'
'Who's really the yuck one?' the person ended his query.
Amidst the debate, some commenters suggested that the man could be 'mentally unwell'.
'Instead of people saying something and getting him out of the pool, people film and laugh and share the video around,' a comment read.
'I agree the behaviour is disgusting, but I also would have spoken up at the moment and not plastered it everywhere,' another said.
'It makes me mad no one said anything. That's so disgusting; why around the kids? Even if he's mentally unwell, someone should have stepped up and done something,' a third lamented.
