Queen Elizabeth will not be attending the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, which starts this weekend.

The decision came after the 95-year-old monarch reportedly spent a night in the hospital just last week. Photo by Frank Augstein.

"Following advice to rest, the Queen has been undertaking light duties at Windsor Castle,” a statement from Buckingham Palace said.

"Her Majesty has regretfully decided that she will no longer travel to Glasgow to attend the evening reception of COP26 on Monday, 1st November.”

"Her Majesty is disappointed not to attend the reception but will deliver an address to the assembled delegates via a recorded video message."

Earlier this month, the Queen shared her opinion on the matters of climate change and the upcoming summit. It is understood that Her Majesty very much wants the conference to succeed and result in significant action from the attending nations.

She will still record a speech later this week, which will be played as a video message to the delegates.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the Queen stayed overnight at a hospital for ‘preliminary investigations’ last week before being sent back home to Windsor.

Her Majesty also cancelled her two-day trip to Northern Ireland last week, following medical advice.

On Tuesday, she returned to work and carried out virtual audiences from Windsor Castle.

Even though the Queen is expected to carry out light engagements in the coming days, duties for the remainder of the year have been cut back for Her Majesty.
