Fly faster and easier with Bonza airline's exciting new direct flight route!

Travellers can now look forward to cheaper and more convenient trips between two of Australia’s most captivating tourist destinations! Budget carrier Bonza Airlines launched their new direct flight route from Mackay, in northern Queensland, to the Gold Coast. With fares starting at just $59 one way per person, this is one journey you won't want to miss out on.

Nestled between the magnificent Whitsunday Islands and the ancient rainforest of Eungella National Park, Mackay is a district of wonders. Locals seek entertainment among the crystal-clear beaches near Cape Hillsborough or the fishing and camping spots along the Pioneer River, while Mackay Airport is also the front door for the bustling Bowen Basin and its coal mining industry.

At the other end of the flight, the Gold Coast is just a completely different kind of paradise. Think glittery nightlife, adrenaline-pumping thrill rides, and of course, superb sandy beaches.

But the flight is not just a great deal; it’s a game-changer for many locals needing to make the 1000-kilometre trip. Eastbound and westbound flights will be in service on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

Bonza Airlines CEO Tim Jordan stated: 'We are thrilled to start connecting the Goldie with Mackay as we continue our mission of connecting communities at affordable prices. Mackay locals can now discover the Coast's adventure parks at an unbeatable price, while the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales can fly in and explore our untouched natural highlights, such as the platypus dwelling at Eungella National Park and our world-class fishing. The Bonza Flight is a much-needed link between these incredible destinations.'

Mackay Airport Head of Operations, Adrian Miles, added, 'We are thrilled to welcome Mackay locals to start exploring the Gold Coast, and for our region to be connected to the large tourist appeal of the Gold Coast. This route expansion allows travellers to make the most of the upcoming festive season.'

The launch of the Bonza Flight route follows a rejig to the company’s offerings after a rocky start to its launch in early 2023. In July, the company announced it would cancel some routes, including its Mackay-Cairns link, and rehaul its scheduling to stay afloat in the competitive airline market. Bonza also welcomed feedback from their customers to refine their services even further.

Customers across Australia have been expressing their satisfaction with Bonza Airlines, citing it as an affordable yet comfortable travel option. From seasoned business travellers to adventure-seeking tourists, the airline has become a favourite for its punctuality and unparalleled service.

However, some reviews about Bonza Airlines have mixed opinions on the matter. One customer, Sarah Taylor, shared online, ‘I booked a last-minute trip from Melbourne to Sydney on Bonza and was blown away by the efficient check-in process and friendly flight crew.’ while others such as Justin G. shared, ‘Rescheduled my flight to 30 hours later and no flexibility with getting me to my destination.’

While the affordable fares of budget airlines like Bonza can be alluring, it's wise to know how to navigate this mode of travel to make your experience as smooth as possible. Here are some helpful tips when taking this route.

Firstly, always be apprised of the baggage policies. Unlike traditional airlines, budget airlines often charge an extra fee for checked luggage and the allowed size for carry-ons may be smaller. Therefore, it's recommended to pack light. Take into account what you genuinely require for your stay in either Mackay or Gold Coast, remembering that both areas provide a sun-soaked lifestyle where heavy clothing may not be necessary.

Next, remember that budget airlines are all about a la carte pricing. This means you only pay for what you use, including must-haves like seat selection and meals. To shave off some dollars, consider packing your snacks or a light meal if it’s a lengthier flight. Perhaps a homemade sandwich or some fresh fruit and nuts to keep you going? Feel free to bring an empty water bottle too, as you can always refill after you pass through security checkpoints at the airports.

Planning your trip ahead of time can also reap benefits. While spontaneity has its charm, budget airlines function best for those who have a fixed schedule. Changing your travel dates or even flight times can come with heavy surcharges. So, while planning your exploration of the art scene in Mackay or the surfing experience in Gold Coast, plan your flight dates accordingly.
