Flight attendant reveals the 3 things she always packs for a smooth flight

There are only two types of travellers: those who pack too little and always forget an important item, and the other half that pack a month’s worth of items for a three-day trip. If you can relate, one Australian flight attendant revealed the perfect in-between so you can pack and enjoy your trip worry-free.

Rosalie Shaw shared the three in-flight essentials she always packs with her on trips, including a passport case, clear pouches, and a selection of outfits in her carry-on luggage.

Rosalie regularly posts videos on her Youtube channel, revealing the best tips and tricks she has picked up since working in the aviation industry. The flight attendant covers everything from her biggest pet peeve to what a day in her life looks like.

In her most recent Youtube video, she emphasised how important it is to keep your passport in its own separate case to avoid it from getting waterlogged or damaged.

'Always keep your passport in a case and then put that case in a ziplock bag or a clear bag,' she advised.

'I know it seems like a lot but a damaged passport will ruin your holiday. The cases protect the pages from being bent, the bag will protect it from any accidental spills, rain, or in my case, a really bumpy boat ride.'

When it comes to toiletries, Rosalie explained that she always keeps them in a clear pouch for a hassle-free airport security check. However, she opts for clear pouches to pack other essentials too as it helps her easily see what each bag contains.

'It just makes it so much easier to find what you need because you can see what's inside them.’ she said.

Last but not least, even if she's taking a hold bag, Rosalie packs her most 'expensive' outfits in her carry-on so she won't be caught in a dilemma if her bag goes missing.

'If you're like me, sometimes you need to bring more stuff with you. If you have to check your bag in, make sure you have two or three of your favourite or most expensive items of clothing with you in your carry-on bag.’ she said.

'If your bag goes missing, you won't be struggling for outfits. I always have my favourite linen dress, another outfit, a cardigan, an extra pair of underwear, and then maybe a bikini, depending on where I'm going. Don’t forget the shoes!’

'One time my bag did go missing, but at least I had some backup outfits with me so I wasn't as stressed.' she continued.

Skincare must-haves for a long flight

If you’ve ever suffered from irritated and dry skin during flights due to dry cabin air, Rosalie shared her favourite products to use to combat the issue.

Rosalie vouched for the 100% Jojoba Oil from The Jojoba Company ($19.95) as a day moisturiser. She also ensures to never leave without her Lucas PawPaw Ointment ($13.25) as it’s ideal for soothing dry lips, elbows, and nail cuticles.

For a travel-friendly lip balm, she's currently 'loving' the MooGoo lip balm ($5.50) because it's slightly smaller and fits easily in her pocket.

The most irritating act that passengers do

In another Youtube video, Rosalie opened up about one of the most frustrating things that customers do during a flight.

'Please don't leave your half peeled, half-eaten, hard-boiled eggs in the seat pockets,' she urged.

‘On short-haul flights, it is the attendants who are cleaning up after passengers and it's a nasty surprise to find a squished egg somewhere on board.’

Rosalie said any passenger can throw rubbish away during one of the many stops that the flight attendants make down the aisles.

How to be comfortable during a flight

Rosalie often spots a lot of passengers wearing their exercise gear or gym tights when travelling but she said that this is the 'worst thing' you can do for your body.

Instead, she recommends wearing loose-fitting clothes and comfortable footwear. Steering clear of wearing high heels on a flight is key as they can lead to a misalignment of your spine over time.

For added convenience, book the aisle seat on a plane so you can drink as much water as you'd like and get up anytime you please without disrupting anyone. Speaking of disruptions, don’t ever drink less water to avoid being a nuisance to other customers, especially if you’re seated on the window seat. Always stay hydrated!

How to pack a carry-on luggage

Sometimes, Rosalie likes to add additional travel to her layovers so she gets the most out of each country she stops by.

During times when she’ll only bring a carry-on suitcase with her, she prepares a 'packing list' to avoid forgetting essentials at the last minute.

Then, she lays out all the outfits that she’s going to bring with her on her bed and ensures there are enough for the length of time she's planning to travel.

She also brings a smaller bag for her hair tools, uses a handbag to store accessories, and brings an over-the-shoulder bag for going out during the day.

Rosalie packs the most important things last including slippers and her ‘plane outfit’ so they stay at the top of the suitcase and are easily accessible.

'Use pencil cases with three zippers to house your makeup and inflight necessities like a passport, tissues, eye mask, pens, chamomile tea, and a hair elastic.' she said.

For international travel out of Australia, passengers are only allowed to bring a maximum of 100 millilitres of liquid per toiletry and they must be packed inside a clear bag.

To avoid the hassle, Rosalie repacks larger moisturisers into travel-friendly containers and brings a stick deodorant as it doesn't classify as either a gel or liquid on a flight.

Shampoo and conditioner 'bars' are also a great option when travelling as liquid versions are more likely to spill.

'I tape any electronics to their adapters so I don't lose anything and have a portable charger ready to go so I never run out of charge.’ she added.

Just like that, you’re ready to brace for flight conundrums like an expert during your next trip.
