Flight attendant reveals shocking reasons why you should never order coffee on a plane

Ordering coffee on a flight can be incredibly appealing—but one flight attendant says it's best to control that temptation.

They were also quick to reveal the shocking reason why you really should avoid drinking coffee during your flight.

A US flight attendant named Kevin recently revealed on social media the ‘disgusting’ reasons why he would never drink coffee on a plane.

Instead of pouring out the remains of the coffee in a bin or drain, Kevin claims that flight attendants are told to dump the coffee down the plane’s toilet.

‘For whatever reason, we’re not supposed to empty coffee pots in drains, we’re supposed to dump it down a toilet,’ he added.

‘I imagine that there’s some kind of splashback of particles and bacteria, whatever, that goes directly back into the coffee pot, which gets put right back into the coffee maker.’

Luckily, Kevin offered wise advice: 'Unless the airline you’re flying has an espresso maker on the plane, I [will] not get coffee.'

Another anonymous post on social media said the water tanks used to make coffee on board a commercial aircraft are rarely cleaned.

Kevin responded that this fact ‘should be the least of your concerns’.

Some flight attendants have since confirmed that this is true, while others said they had always put the coffee pot remains in a bin or galley drains.

In response to the water tanks not being cleaned, an aircraft technician made a video disputing it and said they were cleaned regularly—running the tanks through an 'ozone treatment' to sanitise and clean of any contaminants regularly.

‘[The machine] will be hooked up to the aircraft and ozone treated water will be pumped into the tanks and all the lines disinfecting and cleaning out any kind of contaminants’

‘Once again, it is done four times a year, if not more, and it is strictly regulated.’

The technician also said that the water is tested by engineers who ship sample kits to laboratories to perform tests on the water and make sure there are no contaminants or bacteria.

Despite there being cleaning and sanitation measures, there's no way of knowing if the process is thoroughly carried out on the airlines you fly.
