Find out why Macca’s ‘loose change’ menu made customers furious!

The 'Golden Arches' of Macca's have long been a beacon for those seeking a quick, affordable meal.

However, recent changes to the fast food giant's menu have left many Australian customers feeling short-changed.

A social media user recently sparked a heated debate after sharing a photograph of a Macca's drive-through menu.

The image showed a 24-piece Chicken McNuggets meal priced at $11.95, listed under the 'loose change' menu.

Other items included a hot fudge sundae for $3.50 and an Oreo McFlurry for $4.50.

The menu, traditionally known for its budget-friendly options, has long been a favourite among Macca's customers.

The recent price hike, however, has left many questioning the definition of 'loose change'.

Social media users were quick to voice their outrage, arguing that the items should not cost more than $5.

'Oh perfect I have exactly $11.95 sitting in my centre console, thanks Maccas,' one user sarcastically commented.

'Can’t say I have $12 hanging in the cup holder,' another added.

One person said he would 'be willing to accept 3 coins ($6)' while another said anything more than $6 was 'unloading shrapnel'.

Another joked a phrase referencing 'the change you get back after breaking a note paying for it'.

'Maccas are banking on people who don't carry cash to completely not notice that $11.95 would be a big pocketful of loose change,' another said.

The debate extended beyond the price of the nuggets, with many reminiscing about the days when soft serves were 30c and hamburgers were $1.

'Remember when hamburgers were $1 and chicken and cheeses were $3? Now you pay $5+ for a chicken and cheese which has HALF a slice of cheese!' one person lamented.

For many customers, the price hikes have outpaced their perception of value.

'I miss the $1 hamburgers so much, they really made McDonald’s stand out from other fast food places,' one user wrote.

'Macca's used to be fair value for money 10-years-ago. Now you pay at least 150 per cent more for the same item and it's a bloody mess,' a disgruntled customer wrote.

In response to the backlash, a Macca's Australia spokesman stated that the company is 'committed to our "Value means more at Macca’s" promise'.

'Which includes providing our customers with exceptional everyday value, great customer service, and 24/7 convenience,' he said.

'Customers can get great value at Macca’s through the MyMacca’s App—which offers great discounts, weekly deals and loyalty rewards—and through our year-round Loose Change Menu and Macca’s Bundles, which are available in participating restaurants nationwide.’

'Our Loose Change Menu provides great value on some of our most iconic menu items, including Frozen Coke from $1, Soft Serve Cone with Flake for $1.50, Hamburger for $2, Happy Meal for $5.75, and more.’

'Like all businesses, we review our prices from time to time, considering several factors, including the higher-cost environment we are all operating in.'

As the cost of living continues to rise, fast food chains like Macca's will need to strike a balance between maintaining profitability and offering value to their customers.

While price increases may be inevitable, transparency and communication will be key in managing customer expectations.

In the meantime, customers can take advantage of loyalty programs and apps to access discounts and deals. And who knows? Maybe the outcry will lead to a reevaluation of what constitutes 'loose change'.

Key Takeaways

  • Some customers reminisced about cheaper prices in the past, noting that the fast food chain no longer offers the most affordable options for quick snacks.
