Finance pro shares how she got 20% off her hotel room bill – including the money-saving strategies she swears by while travelling

Let’s face it… Globetrotting, more often than not, isn’t a cheap pursuit... Travelling is typically a pricey endeavour (particularly if you’re a few decades too old for a backpack and a hostel) but there are several workarounds to enjoying a trip without having to return home with an empty wallet.
A savvy finance guru from Sydney, Queenie Tan, detailed how she manages to hop across the globe with her fiancé on a tight budget.
The couple embarked on an international holiday that started in Singapore, where they stayed in a 5-star hotel, the Marina Bay Sands, but still saved $158.55 by simply booking through the website, ShopBack.
After Singapore, the couple’s global itinerary includes visits to London, Paris, New York, Vancouver, and Las Vegas before returning back home to Sydney.

Queenie revealed the simple hack in an Instagram video, adding that it doesn't hurt to tell the hotel staff if you're celebrating a special occasion too – as they received a free room upgrade and chocolates after informing them that they recently got engaged.
“This is how I saved 20 per cent off my hotel! Activate ShopBack so you can get extra cashback on your booking,” Queenie said in the clip.
“And if you're celebrating a special occasion, make sure to tell them! We got a free room upgrade and chocolates because we just got engaged,”
ShopBack is a rewards program that allows users to receive a small percentage of cash back from their online purchases.

The video clocked up more than 22,000 views within the span of 24 hours, with dozens of users in the comments thanking the finance guru for the helpful tip.
The couple only paid $1,000 each for all the flights thanks to the Qantas points that they had accumulated by using a credit card for everyday purchases. If they had paid the regular price for the flights, Queenie said that it would have set them back over $10,000.
In a separate Instagram video, Queenie said that she swears by the phone app ‘Klook’ to shop for the best bargains when looking to spend on tourist experiences and activities.
“I'm on a round-the-world trip and this is how I save money on tour activities,” she explained.
“I use an app called Klook – you can buy cheaper tours, tickets, and sim cards on this app!”
Queenie also mentioned that you can have the opportunity to receive cashback on selected offers with the app.

But Queenie isn’t the first to capture the attention of users with savvy travel hacks. Last month, TikTok creator and avid traveller Téa Angelos listed her best money-saving tips in a series of videos on the social media platform. The 25 year old also vouched for using cashback services along with other little tricks you can opt to do to keep your travel expenses to a minimum.
