Fans react to singer’s heartbreaking revelation before untimely death at 79

Australia has lost one of its most cherished musical voices with the passing of a singer at the age of 79.

The news comes as a shock to many, as it was only days ago that she shared her recent leukaemia diagnosis with her fans and loved ones.

For those who grew up in the golden era of Australian pop, Marcie Jones was a familiar and beloved presence.

As the lead singer of Marcie & The Cookies, she helped define the sound of the late 1960s, bringing energy, soul, and a uniquely Australian flair to the charts.

The group’s harmonies and infectious singles made them a staple on radio and television, and Marcie’s powerful voice quickly became her signature.

After her time with The Cookies, Marcie struck out on her own, releasing a string of solo singles and her debut album, That Girl Jones, in the 1970s.

Her music resonated with audiences across the country, and she continued to perform for decades, never losing her passion for the stage or her connection with fans.

The heartbreaking news of her passing was shared by her daughter-in-law, Lisa Asta, in a touching Facebook post:

‘It’s with great sadness to let you all know that my beautiful mother-in-law, Marcie Jones, passed away yesterday evening. I feel numb inside. Marc, never again will there be our little outbursts of song and dance. You made me laugh so hard and always gave me great advice. You were a legend and an icon, and you will always be remembered. You always said that we were so alike in many ways, and that’s why I know you will always be my guiding light. I will miss you so much. I love you. Until we meet again to sing another song.’

Just days before her passing, Marcie had taken to social media to share her diagnosis with her characteristic honesty and courage:

‘Sorry to start the day with rotten news. I am in hospital with leukaemia starting treatment soon. We are all feeling very scared, but I’ll fight as hard as I can.’

Marcie’s openness about her illness, even in her final days, is a testament to her strength and her deep connection with her fans.

She was never one to shy away from the truth, and her willingness to share her journey—both the highs and the lows—made her all the more beloved.

A Life in Music and Beyond Marcie Jones’ career was more than just a string of hits.

She was a trailblazer for women in the Australian music industry, paving the way for future generations of female artists. Her memoir, Runs In The Blood, published in 2008, offers a candid look at her life on and off the stage.

In it, she’s described as an 'unsung Australian music legend' who, despite not always receiving the recognition she deserved, remained steadfast in her commitment to her craft and her family.

Throughout her life, Marcie balanced her musical ambitions with her role as a devoted mother to her two sons.

Her story is one of resilience, determination, and an unwavering love for music—a story that resonates with so many Australians who remember her as both a star and a down-to-earth, relatable figure.

A Lasting Legacy While Marcie may not have always been in the spotlight, her influence on Australian music is undeniable.

She inspired countless artists with her talent, work ethic, and authenticity. Her songs, performances, and the memories she created will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.

As we remember Marcie Jones, we also reflect on the importance of sharing our stories, supporting one another through difficult times, and celebrating the lives of those who have made a difference.

Marcie was actually engaged to Normie Rowe.....but he was conscripted into the Army and deployed to Vietnam. She then moved to Britain in a career move, and they unfortunately drifted apart. RIP Marcie🌷

I have a reasonably extensive knowledge of Australian music from the 1960s until the early 2000s but I have drawn a complete blank on Marcie Jones.

RIP 🌷 🌷🌷
Same era as Olivia Newton-John, Normie Rowe, Ian Turpie, etc. I remember Marcie as a bubbly young girl in white boots. Marcie, Olivia, Pat (Farell??) went to London about the same time to further their career.
