Fans Outraged: Gabby Epstein Faces Backlash Over Controversial Park Bench Remarks – See Why They're Furious!

In the age of social media, a single post can ignite a firestorm of reactions, and Australian model Gabby Epstein learned this firsthand. The 30-year-old influencer found herself at the centre of controversy after making a seemingly flippant remark about a community initiative aimed at combating loneliness. The initiative, which has seen the installation of 'happy to chat benches' across Australia, encourages people to sit and engage in conversation with strangers, fostering a sense of connection and community.

Epstein's post, which featured an image of one such bench on the Gold Coast, was accompanied by a caption that read, 'I would literally throw up on someone if they sat next to me on a bench and started talking. This country is in shambles.' The post, intended as a joke, was not received lightly by her followers, who were quick to express their disappointment and anger.

The backlash was swift and severe, with many of Epstein's followers flooding her inbox with messages of disapproval. The bench initiative, which originated in the UK, has been widely praised for its simple yet effective approach to addressing the pervasive issue of loneliness, particularly among seniors and those who may not have regular social interaction.

One enraged fan responded, 'How is this country in shambles? Don't sit on the chair then. Kids are starving to death and getting their legs blown off and this is your biggest complaint? Grow the f*** up.' Others pointed out more pressing issues facing the country, such as Queensland's stance on abortion, the celebration of Australia Day, economic concerns, and the political landscape.

Epstein's attempt to clarify that her post was 'just a joke' did little to quell the uproar. She shared screenshots of the critical messages she received, along with her own responses that suggested her followers were overreacting. 'Out of all the things I have posted, THIS is what ya'll are most upset about? Might I suggest touching some grass?' she wrote in one reply.

The model later spoke to The Daily Telegraph, reiterating that her comment was meant to be tongue-in-cheek and expressing surprise at the strong reaction it provoked. She urged people to not take things so seriously and to focus their energy on more significant issues.

The incident highlights the delicate balance influencers must maintain when navigating the public sphere. While social media platforms provide a space for humor and light-heartedness, they also demand a level of sensitivity and awareness of the broader social context. The 'happy to chat bench' initiative, while seemingly innocuous, touches on the profound issues of social isolation and mental health, particularly relevant to our senior community members who often face loneliness.

As we reflect on this episode, it's essential to recognise the power of our words and the platforms we use. Initiatives like the 'happy to chat bench' are vital in our communities, offering a lifeline to those seeking human connection. It's a reminder that sometimes, a simple conversation can make a world of difference to someone's day.

tongue in cheek- how convenient to say this after the fact. She clearly does not have a clue. It's not something you joke about especially given what she said she'd do if someone e sat next to her. How arrogant, non compassionate, unaware of the real things that she say should be looking at instead, when this is such a big issue.

To quote from the article: “As we reflect on this episode, it's essential to recognise the power of our words and the platforms we use”.

Initiatives like the 'happy to chat bench' are vital in our communities, offering a lifeline to those seeking human connection. It's a reminder that sometimes, a simple greeting can make a world of difference to someone's day.

AND so often some words from some on this site (I’ve said some occasionally also) do hurt others so we need to BE AWARE OF WHAT WE SAY & HOW WE SAY THOSE WORDS BECAUSE WE MIGHT BE HURTING SOMEONE IN THE BARGAIN.

The type of response and attitude of ‘no skin off my back or off my nose’ might just be causing someone else immense pain, not helping them but causing them to shrink further into a hole when often they are just seeking comfort and recognition as being another human being.

"Influencer" ?? Isn't this just a sales person?
I have never heard of her. You are right I considered Influencers as sales people too. Who just about say anythiñg to get people reading what they say. 30 years old, oh darling you are just a baby standing next to me and I am sure you haven't experience life to the extent of everyone here at SDC . Influencer hah it changes to a sales person
who dribbles and not listening to what she saying and cracks it when it doesn't go her way.
I can see a big bib for you sweetheart to catch all that dribbling.

Sometimes you both don't need to be sitting down........I was sitting on a bench about to ring for a taxi when I looked up and saw this young wman walking towards me crying. I thought she needed a smile so when she got closer I smiled at her and said hello. she stopped walking and looked a bit out of it, she looked at me and asked me why I spoke to her, I said she looked like she needed it. Anyway to cut a long story short, she sat down, we talked for ages, we hugged a few times, I cried with her, she told me she was on her way to the bridge to jump off cos she felt like no-one loved her and me smiling at her made her feel like she mattered. So I felt so happy as Harry that day knowing I changed someone's mind just with a smile and a hello. p.s. I still see her around town and she is now so happy!

Fantastic Leeta069 - yes, sometimes just a smile or a ‘hello’ can help someone feel wanted. I hope this young lady is still around for a very long time and you will always have a few minutes to give to her.

Congratulations and God bless you for this kind act. Should be more of your kind in this world instead of all the unkindness with war, shootings, burnings, looting etc that we see everyday. We are certainly living in a troubled world with no ‘give’ only ‘take’ at every turn.

What a ridiculous thing for people to get upset and angry about. I for one think it's a good idea and i'd sit on it.
They are not angry at the idea of a wonderful chat bench! They are rightly angry about some hussy’s response to it- now trying to make us think it was a joke. Not a fan

But why be angry at whoever said it, personally I can't stand "influences", they are a waste of space and I would never follow one, but overall it's a good idea no matter who said it!
