Fact of the day: Why do wine bottles have dents?
Ever noticed that dent at the bottom of a wine bottle? It’s called a punt, and it dates back to the days of hand-blown glass — glassblowers pushed the bottom inward to hide sharp marks and help the bottle stand up straight. Today, punts still serve a few purposes: they add strength (especially important for bubbly wines under high pressure), help sediment settle in older reds and ports, and even create a sense of quality — a deeper punt can make the bottle feel heavier and fancier.
