Fact of the Day: The significance of Matryoshka dolls​

Dolls come in many shapes and sizes, but the most unique one of them all is the Matryoshka doll.

These are Russian nesting dolls that contain smaller versions of themselves as you unfurl them.

However, dolls from ancient Greek palaeolithic Venuses, figurines archeologists discovered in many European countries and even ones found in China, Japan and India had similar dolls.

What makes these dolls a cultural symbol?

Throughout history, the picture of the happy peasant woman characterised by the Matryoshka symbolises fertility, hence it revealing smaller versions of itself.
