Fact of the day: Crocodiles Can’t Stick Out Their Tongue
Here’s a surprising bit of reptile trivia: Crocodiles are physically unable to stick out their tongue. Unlike most animals, a crocodile’s tongue is held in place by a strong membrane that keeps it firmly attached to the roof of its mouth.
This adaptation isn’t just random — it serves an important purpose. Crocodiles have incredibly powerful jaws, and this membrane helps prevent them from accidentally biting their own tongue while snapping shut on prey. It’s one of many ways their bodies are optimised for survival in the wild.
So the next time you see a croc with its mouth wide open, remember: it’s not being shy — it literally can’t stick out its tongue!
