Fact of the Day: A war once broke out over... poop?
In 1864, Spain went to war with Peru over the Chincha Islands—home to animal excrement (locally known as guano) deposits up to 100 feet thick. Why? Dried guano was a key ingredient in fertilizer and gunpowder, making it one of the most valuable resources of the time.
Spain occupied the islands to control the guano trade, but Peru—and later Chile, Bolivia, and Ecuador—fought back. The Spanish eventually withdrew, and the poop-fueled conflict became known as the Chincha Islands War.
