1. Forgetting measurements

Experts advised that it is vital to take the correct measurements of the space where you will be placing your tree, suggesting that measuring the area instead of just measuring the height is crucial.

According to the experts, a tree that is too big could make your room feel full, whilst a tree that is too small could appear underwhelming.

They also advised that if you fall short on baubles and lights, place the majority of them to the front because the back of your tree will rarely be seen by you or your guests.

2. Not checking the fairy lights

It is a major disappointment for most people when they unveil their fairy lights around the tree only for them to find out that the lights are not working.

The experts said that you need to check them first by popping them in the socket and then replacing them should you find the lights faulty.

3. Lack of symmetry

A common mistake by most people is hanging a lot of ornaments on their tree, making it look crowded.

It is best to have a plan of what you want your Christmas tree to look like before decorating it, according to the experts. They also said that you should spread out your decorations evenly, whilst considering symmetry.

4. Hanging ornaments first

Experts warned about hanging your baubles and trinkets before your fairy lights as it will make things a little more complicated should you consider redecorating or rearranging the ornaments.

5. Choosing only uniform baubles

Although replicating the design of the tree you found at the shopping centre could give your home a 'show home look', your home is your sanctuary.

The experts advised that you should decorate your tree according to your own personality — which means clashing baubles and DIY ornaments could be great decorations to your tree.

6. Forgetting the inner branches

A common mistake that most of us are guilty of is only decorating the edge of the branches and neglecting the inside of the tree.

You should add the larger decorations inside of the tree where they will look best, according to the experts.

The best decorations for the edge of branches are the longer decorations (e.g. icicles, candy canes) because the light reflects off them it gives the tree a warm and dazzling look from the inside out.

They also noted that you should place some decorations on the hidden back branches so in any case that the tree is moved, it wouldn't be unflattering.

7. You leave the tree stand exposed

It is best to cover the tree stand with presents and gift bags. Leaving the legs of the tree stand could either expose that you have an artificial tree or could ruin the overall look of the tree.

8. Neglecting your Christmas cards

Christmas cards can sometimes make your home look cluttered but did you know that properly placing them could add a festive touch to the rest of your house?

The experts advised that Christmas cards could either be strung up or hung around your mantlepiece, window, or even on your walls if you're lacking on space.

9. Not decorating the garden

Whilst decorating your home is the most important part of the festive season, decorating your garden could also bring about the holiday spirit in your neighbourhood.

If you have a tree outside, try wrapping it with lights, according to the experts.

10. You leave it until the last minute

For procastinators (like us), leaving the decorations for later can cause us a lot of stress as we catch up with the hustle and bustle of holiday celebrations.

Experts advised us to plan ahead and get the decorations done early so we can avoid getting stressed before the celebrations.

11. Lack of preparation when taking them down

I know a lot of you may be confused as to why we are talking about taking the decorations down when we're supposed to be discussing how to put them up. But experts said that prioritising the organisation of your decorations can save you stress for next year.

We hope these tips could help you ramp up your decoration game this year! Should you have any tips on how to perfect your Christmas decorations, share them with us in the comments below so other members of the SDC can use them too!

In our family it was tradition to do all the decorating on November 30th so everything was up for December and then it all came down on New Year's Eve. Mum only ever decorated the front of the tree and left the side near the wall empty. We never had enough decorations to cover the whole lot.

Christmas cards were always hung on a very long red ribbon that went across the archway between the dining room and lounge. We each made a new decoration each year to add to the tree. I still have the ones I made from when I was 3 until I was 30.

The only constant on our tree is the angel that goes on the top. She is a 9inch doll that was exquisitely dressed for me by a little old lady nearly 50 years ago. I see the kids and grandkids eyeing her up each year and know that she will be much loved for years to come.
