Experts call it the ‘best bet’ for shoppers—This supermarket beat big rivals on price

If you’ve been feeling the pinch at the checkout lately, you’re not alone. With the cost of living on everyone’s mind, finding ways to save on the weekly grocery shop has become a national pastime—almost as popular as a cuppa and a bikkie!

But if you’re wondering which supermarket is truly giving you the best bang for your buck, the latest findings from consumer group CHOICE might just have you rethinking your shopping routine.

ALDI: The Undisputed Champion of Cheap
CHOICE recently sent mystery shoppers to 104 supermarkets across Australia, comparing the prices of a basket of everyday grocery items.

The verdict? ALDI has once again left the big names—Coles, Woolworths, and IGA—eating its dust. For a basket of 14 staple items, ALDI’s total came in at just $55.35, while Woolies and Coles trailed behind at $58.92 and $59.22 respectively.

IGA, meanwhile, was a distant fourth at $69.74—a whopping 25% more expensive than ALDI!

Even when specials and discounts were factored in, ALDI still held onto its crown, with the basket dropping to $54.44.

Coles and Woolies followed at $57.67 and $58.86, and IGA at $67.54. So, whether you’re after a hearty porridge breakfast or a comforting mug of hot chocolate, ALDI is the place to be for winter warmers and everyday essentials alike.

What’s in the Basket?
You might be wondering what exactly CHOICE put in their shopping basket. The base items included full cream milk, Weetbix, Royal Gala apples, carrots, Cavendish bananas, strawberries, and chicken breast fillets.

For this winter’s 'spotlight' items, they added vegetable stock, sour cream, drinking chocolate, butternut pumpkin, quick oat sachets, garlic, and brown onions. These are the sorts of things most of us pick up every week—so the savings are real and relevant.

Where the Other Supermarkets Shine
It’s not all doom and gloom for the other supermarkets, though. CHOICE CEO Ashley de Silva pointed out that Woolworths had the cheapest chicken breasts and pumpkin, Coles was the best for apples, and IGA offered the lowest prices on carrots and garlic. But for everything else, ALDI was the clear winner.

Supermarket Price Wars: What’s Changing?
With ALDI’s prices making headlines, it’s no surprise that Coles and Woolworths are fighting back. Woolies has slashed prices on 550 products (up from 400) and is promising to keep them low until at least 2026.

Coles has also cut prices on over 300 winter essentials and household staples for three months, starting from June. Both are hoping to lure shoppers back with these deals, but ALDI’s everyday low prices mean you don’t have to chase specials or worry about missing out.

ALDI’s Approach: No Gimmicks, Just Savings
ALDI’s Chief Commercial Officer, Jordan Lack, summed it up: 'Whether you’re picking up winter warmers to beat the cold or just topping up on everyday essentials, ALDI will always deliver unbeatable value through our range of great quality products at everyday low prices.'

Unlike its competitors, ALDI doesn’t rely on flashy discounts or loyalty schemes—just consistently low prices.
