Easy and healthy sweet potato ‘hummus’

Does anyone else love how convenient and delicious hummus is? If you’re a fan too, we’re delighted to tell you that there’s no need to drop by the grocery store to get your fix – because you can easily whip up an alternative with only a few ingredients!

One popular foodie on TikTok, Danielle Brown, demonstrated how she makes ‘hummus’ at home using sweet potatoes instead of chickpeas.

‘This sweet potato hummus is going to blow your mind! Instead of using chickpeas to make traditional hummus, this one’s made with roasted sweet potatoes.’ she can be heard saying in her TikTok video.

Here’s what you’ll need for her recipe:

1. Two cups of sweet potatoes
2. A can of white beans
3. A quarter cup of tahini
4. Two tablespoons of lemon juice
5. Half a cup of olive oil
6. Two cloves of garlic
7. Half a tablespoon of salt
8. Parsley

Sweet potatoes are packed with vitamins! Source: @healthygirlkitchen

She starts by roasting two cups of chopped sweet potatoes in the oven. Once the potatoes are perfectly cooked, she grabs a food processor and adds the roasted potatoes, white beans, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, and salt.

She blends all of the ingredients until it reaches a smooth, creamy texture that’s similar to regular hummus. To finish it all off, she tops her creation with some more olive oil, parsley, and pepper.

‘Make a batch for the week to keep in the fridge for healthy snacking. You won’t believe how good this tastes!’ she gushed.

The best part about this recipe is that it’s extremely healthy. According to WebMD, one sweet potato is sufficient to provide you with the amount of vitamin A that your body needs daily.

‘This helps keep your eyes healthy and boosts your body's defence against germs. It's also good for your reproductive system and organs like your heart and kidneys.’

Danielle’s TikTok video amassed 289.1k views and over a hundred comments from users who were keen to give her recipe a go.

‘Packed with proteins and looks delicious! I will definitely try this!’ one person praised alongside heart emojis.

‘I’m going to make this. I love sweet potatoes!’ another added.

However, a few were confused as to what tahini was, with one asking: ‘What’s tahini?’

To which another responded: ‘Tahini is blended sesame seeds. It’s similar to peanut butter in taste and consistency.’

A fifth recommended eating bread, carrot and cucumber sticks, and celery with the sweet potato dip.
