But one eagle-eyed shopper in Australia was shocked when they spotted a bizarre sign at their local Anaconda store.
The customer, who posted about the experience on the Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook group, noticed how the note indicated that the items were sold at a 40% ‘discount’ - but the pricing on the sign showed that the items were more expensive by 1 cent each.
Yes, you read that right - even with a ‘discount’, the item's price was still higher than it was initially!
'Run, don’t walk……these Anaconda discounts are amazing,' the shopper wrote sarcastically.
The post gained a slew of comments from the shocked and angry members of the group.
'How did someone even approve this?' wrote one user.
'Maybe the staff have had enough of the lies in their marketing and deliberately did it to show us that the discounts are bull. Where is consumer affairs in monitoring dishonesty?' said another.
Other members suggested that the whole thing could be an April Fools’ joke, considering that the sign was posted in the first week of April.
One person speculated: ‘Maybe it was an April Fools’ joke, and it was so successful, it’s been extended.’
Meanwhile, some customers shared their own experiences of checking the pricing of the items before they paid at the checkout.
One shopper recounted: ‘I bought a fishing shirt on sale. At the checkout, it must’ve scanned higher and I queried it and yes, it was 25% off.’
‘Glad I questioned it. Always a good idea to try and remember the price on the sign.’
