Driver’s Licence

Do you remember when driver's licences looked like this? Unlike the modern plastic licences that include a photo ID, back in the day, it was just a slip of paper that had to be renewed annually. They also cost a mere 10 shillings! You had to do a driving test and answer twelve questions on a test paper.

Over here in WA, ours was a paper as well except a little prettier than the east, ours was white blue black in colour and we had to get 28 out of 30 questions right before we could get our L plates, the cost was $11 in the Pilbara during the 70’s……..Rick62

Yep ; I'm old(ish) so I had one of them
My mother's dad phoned to ask the local police sergeant if he could fix her up with a driver's license as she was driving into Roma . Driving into Roma was over 30 miles (50ks) of rough dirt road !!
She drove home with her driver's license ; no test was needed

To get my truck license (for a semi) in rural WA I had to answer the questions (4 of us helped each other out !) ; and the driving test was one gear change , 4 left hand turns (around the block) and I was legal to drive a 100 ton triple road train anywhere they were legal ; or not legal ( it was only illegal if ya got caught .
But I never seriously bent a truck , or trailer after that; and never lost a point ; or given a point (when the points system was brought into Qld (1970-80s) we were given 9 points to lose . Even cops say I have a very clean record for any truck driver ---- yeah ok ; lots more arse than class but it is what it is .
My three road rules learnt over the years ; common sense , patience , courtesy/respect to other road users ---- and give way to the right .
I feel sorry for the dramas and cost the youngsters go through to get a driver's license today when most of the problems on the roads are causes by just a few totally brain dead knuckle heads and many are are not really young .
