Dramatic in-flight argument divides internet, starts conversation on airplane etiquette

Travelling in tight spaces can be tense.

Imagine being stuck in a cramped seat for hours while others keep bumping into your chair due to narrow aisles—it’s a recipe for crankiness.

Now, on a recent flight, things got even more interesting.

A disagreement between a woman and her seatmate escalated into a heated argument, sparking a debate among passengers and online users about who was right and who was wrong. It certainly was one turbulent flight!

A woman accused the passenger behind her of pushing her seat repeatedly when she reclined it.

Someone named Ian Miles Cheong was able to repost a copy of the altercation, which the original poster took down for unspecified reasons.

Cheong shared it on another platform where it garnered significant attention, amassing more than 2.7 million views.

It was unclear when the incident occurred or where the flight was headed, but in the video, the unnamed woman could be heard expressing her frustration at the man sitting behind her, ‘The whole trip she pushed my seat. You’ve seen it. You know she did.’

‘I’m allowed to put my seat back,' the woman repeatedly screamed at her fellow traveller.

‘She’s allowed to put her seat back. You don’t get to kick it repeatedly just because you want more space,’ the clip’s original caption read.

The video received numerous responses from viewers.

Some supported the woman, while others mentioned that you shouldn’t recline your seat because of space constraints.

‘Putting your seat back in coach is an unspoken thing most people don’t do. It's really the airlines’ fault because they’ve made coach so cramped and tight that putting the seat back shouldn’t even be an option,’ one person wrote.

‘I mean, if she wasn’t allowed to put her seat back, then why was the seat adjustable?’ asked another.

‘They add the recline seat button for a reason. It actually cost the airline extra money to provide this feature, it’s meant to be used,’ one stressed.

‘Kicking the seat is just a whiny childish move,’ wrote a fourth one. A fifth added, ‘She's saying the truth. But it’s also true it sucks the person in front of you puts its seat back.’

‘That extra two inches of recline on most planes does nothing. Airliners should do away with recliners in coach,’ someone else pointed out.

One person praised the woman for ‘standing her ground’, while another called her ‘pathetic’ for ‘inconveniencing’ the person behind her.

The topic of whether or not it’s acceptable to recline your seat on an aeroplane has long been debated.

Back in June, an etiquette expert criticised those who put their chairs back on flights.

Etiquette Expert Diane Gottsman said: ‘Unless you were sitting in a seat with extra legroom, or first class, it would be inconsiderate to recline your seat.’

Another expert pointed out that it’s especially rude if someone is working on a laptop or eating a meal on their tray table.

A few weeks later, a flight attendant named ‘Ichbinvin’ took to social media also weighed in on the matter.

‘I know there will be people in the comments saying, “I paid for my ticket I can do whatever I want.” Yes, while that may be true, it doesn’t make you not an a****le,’ he shared.

He stressed that before reclining your seat, you should consider two ‘very important things’. They were the length of the flight and the time of day.

‘If you are on a one-hour flight in the middle of the day, there is no need to recline your seat,’ he added.

‘However, if you’re on a one-hour flight at five in the morning you could do it.’

He suggested that for flights over three hours, reclining your seat is acceptable at any time.

For flights shorter than that, he continued: ‘You need to read the room and see what's going on.’

Alas, but I am so tall that anyone pushing back their reclining seat onto my knees will have an uncomfortable flight; it can't be avoided now that airlines don't allow adequate legroom in cattle-class for anyone other than a legless dwarf or the former CEO of Qantas.
