Dorcas

Who remembers these little tin pins? They were a common sight in every Aussie home and a must-have in every mum’s sewing basket back in the day. This photo brings back memories of our dear old mums sitting at the kitchen table mending clothes, darning socks, and sewing away with her trusty treadle Singer Sewing Machine. I can still hear the sound of the machine and see the pins carefully arranged in that bright little Dorcas tin. Do you have any fond memories of these tin pins? Or maybe you still have some at home? We’d love to hear all about them here!

I keep my pins in an old mustard jar. I learnt dressmaking at the local tech, during my last two years at high school.
Our teacher showed us how to make a pattern using our measurements, then create a blouse, jacket, skirt and dress.
Sewing these days is mainly alterations, but I used to make my own clothes.

Definitely was the proud owner of the little blue can of pins when l started sewing in year 7, too long ago to remember what we had to create though. Retired the short pins for longer ones with beads on the ends but still come across a tiny short one occasionally. Don’t sew a lot now, but still have a large cupboard full of fabric & heaps of pattern! If only my arthritic hands would comply.

Have the tin with the longer pins with pearl ends in it now. The shorter pins were too hard to manage as I got older. Have had the tin since primary school when the girls learnt sewing and the boys learnt woodwork whether you wanted to or not, there were no choices back then. Girls, sewing and home science, cooking, household stuff, boys woodwork.
