Don't get left behind! WhatsApp may stop working on your phone this month
- Replies 3
We depend on our phones so much these days – they're like a third hand at this point! So, it's understandable that we get a bit panicky when something goes wrong with them, or when we learn that they might soon become obsolete.
The latter is the case for many iPhone users out there who are still using some of the older models. If you haven't upgraded your phone in a few years, then you may be affected by this news.
WhatsApp is set to stop working on these older iPhones from October 24 onwards. This means that if you have an iPhone running on iOS 11 or below, you won't be able to use WhatsApp anymore unless you update your operating system (OS).
For context, iOS 11 was released back in 2017 and can only run 64-bit apps – something that was introduced at the time and caused many 32-bit apps available on older operating systems to become unsupported.
Now, WhatsApp will wave goodbye to iOS 11 when it updates its required specifications this month.

A spokesperson for WhatsApp announced the news on their official website, saying: 'Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates.'
'These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.'
'To choose what to stop supporting, every year we, like other technology companies, look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest number of people still using them.'
Before the app stops working on your phone altogether, WhatsApp will directly alert you so that you can take action accordingly. However, we recommend taking care of it sooner rather than later just to be safe!
Here are the steps that can help you update your phone's operating system if you find the process intimidating:
Later OS updates, such as iOS 11, are not compatible with older iPhone models, like the iPhone 5 and 5C. Credit: CNET.
To start, go to the 'Settings' menu, tap 'General', and select 'Software Update.' However, if your phone does not have a 64-bit processor, such as the iPhone 5 and 5C models, the process cannot be done on your phone.
You'll need to purchase a new phone (with a built-in 64-bit processor) instead. You can shop for new phones at a reputable mobile phone store or have your local phone repair store conduct a diagnostic test of your phone's operating system.
You read it here, members! If you're using an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or 6s, you'll still be able to continue using WhatsApp – as those devices can be updated. However, if you're still using an iPhone 5 or 5c (which are over a decade old), then it might be a good time to upgrade your smartphone.
Is a new smartphone on your radar right now? If so, what brand and model do you have in mind? Leave a comment below and tell us! Who knows, one of your fellow members may have the same phone and be able to offer some tips and advice.
