'Do not do this!': Woman spreads warning over viral cleaning trick

When it comes to household chores, one task often gets pushed to the bottom of the list: cleaning the oven.

It's a job that requires time, effort, and usually a lot of scrubbing.

It's no wonder that when a new cleaning trick pops up, promising to make this daunting task easier, many of us are eager to try it.

However, be warned—not all tricks are created equal, and some can do more harm than good.

A woman took to social media to share her experience with a popular oven-cleaning trick that ended in disaster.

The trick—recently featured in this article—suggested that placing a dishwashing tablet in water inside a hot oven would create steam to loosen grime and make cleaning effortless.

Unfortunately, the reality was far from the promise.

'I tried this today and can confidently say do not do this!' she warned in a post.

'It did not work; I should have known if a dishwasher isn't going to clean racks and trays in the oven, then to assume this will work for the overall oven was ridiculous.'

'The fumes that come from the oven are awful. It also left a nasty white film all over the glass and base, similar to what you get when you clean an oven with oven cleaner and use the oven, only to see white patches everywhere where there's still product but can't be seen prior,' she added.

Despite the warning, the trick gained traction, leading to mixed reviews.

'I tried this today on a very overdue-clean oven, and it works!! It's absolute magic. I loved it. I'm now the proud owner of a sparkly clean oven,' one reviewer wrote.

'It wasn't awful but required as much scrubbing as it normally would. I wanted this to work amazingly, but it didn't,' another added.

The varied experiences suggested that the trick's success may depend on factors like the type of oven, the degree of dirtiness, and perhaps even the brand of dishwashing tablet used.

So, before trying out the latest viral cleaning trick online—particularly for appliances—here are a few things to keep in mind:
  • Chemical reactions: Combining heat with cleaning products can cause harmful chemical reactions. Always read the labels and use products as directed.
  • Ventilation: Good ventilation is crucial when cleaning your oven, especially if you are trying something new. Fumes from cleaning agents can be hazardous to your health.
  • Material safety: Certain cleaning methods might damage the heating elements or special coatings in your oven. Check your oven's manual for cleaning recommendations.
  • Effort vs. Outcome: If a cleaning trick promises miraculous results with little effort, it might be too good to be true. Sometimes, a bit of elbow grease is unavoidable.
  • Professional advice: When in doubt, seek advice from professionals or trusted sources. Your oven is a valuable appliance, and it's worth taking care of it properly.
Happy cleaning, and may your ovens always be as spotless as your wisdom is vast!

I don't like cleaning my oven like most people. It never gets dirty really, as l only bake in it. I roast in an electric frying pan.
I read on the internet a great way to clean the oven with the over powering chemicals, l thought wonderful as l have a serious lung problem which causes constant coughing and production of phelym.
So l read mix vinegar and bicarb soda into a paste and use a pastry brush to paint onto oven and racks leave. Just wipe clean.
Well l still have powdery flakes appearing everytime l use the oven. I wipe it out looks like l have got it all, then again I use the oven and it appears again.
So next time back to the toxic cleaning. With a very tight 😷 mask. To add insult to injury the paste did not clean the oven door.
Never to old to learn. Good luck to all you brave people cleaning your ovens today. Put your haz mat gear on. 😮‍💨🥵☢️
Kind regards to all Vicki

My best decision when we moved house was to buy a self cleaning oven ... the heavens opened.
Also, another tip, my daughter-in-law never bakes anything that cannot go into an oven bag. She has never had to clean the oven.
In the ölden"days, I used to turn the oven on with a dish of water in it and elbow grease did the rest. Never believed in putting caustic products in there.
If all else fails, don't bake anything. Seems like those air fryers are all the rage at the moment. My niece swears by hers.
