A recent hack has gone viral on social media after a mum claimed that a simple mixture of apple cider vinegar, hot water and sugar can do the unimaginable — completely get rid of the annoying insects.

You read that right, folks! Apparently, three easily-accessible kitchen materials can do the trick according to Sydney mum, Syl.

"Finally found a fruit fly recipe that works! We’ve been struggling with fruit flies on and off for months and nothing worked," she wrote in a Facebook post.

"Last night, I made up a shot of Apple Cider Vinegar, hot water and a tablespoon of sugar - and voila! Not a single fly anywhere in the kitchen!"

The mum said that she found this to be more effective than store-bought traps or other methods she had tried.

The post has gained traction, garnering more than 1,000 likes and hundreds of comments from other organisation and cleaning enthusiasts who shared their own tips to get rid of the pesky insects.

Several commenters say that they've had success with similar methods, including adding a little dishwashing liquid and honey to the mixture before pouring it in a jar with holes punched in the top.

One user shared: "I get them at home and at the nursing home I work at because we all get fruit from local farms."

"We have old coffee jars around the places they get bad with Apple Cider Vinegar, a few drops of dishwashing liquid (unscented is best), then cover the top in cling wrap, rip a hole about 0.5cm in the centre and drizzle a bit of honey on it."

"Within a day they will be gone!"

Another user backed this claim, saying that the trick works for them too.

"We did the apple cider vinegar and dish soap and caught heaps, they can't break past the surface tension of the dish liquid."

Others said that white vinegar or wine vinegar works just as well as apple cider vinegar.

One person recommended: "We did this with just white vinegar and it worked a treat. We found they were bad around the drains!"

"White wine vinegar works too if you don’t have apple cider vinegar," another agreed.

Meanwhile, some people said that it is important to troubleshoot the problem from its root cause, suggesting that one should check their pipes or drainage whenever fruit flies start infesting their homes.

One user wrote: "We had a fruit fly problem also and could not figure out where they were coming from until our sink wouldn't drain water!"

"Pulled all the pipes apart under the sink and discovered that's where they were coming from.”

“Apparently they love sink pipes because they are damp and dark — perfect for them to lay eggs. And then they fly up the drain! I would recommend checking your pipes."

Another shared: "I had the same problem for months. I was convinced that they were fruit flies and I had called on pest control."

"They actually drain flies (never knew they existed) and they live off the sediment in the drain pipes. Got the area treated and finally they are all gone."

For a start, all the above comments refer to Drosophila - not fruit fly. The genuine fruit fly is a different animal and won't easily fall for traps (pardon the pun) such as suggested

If you drink wine.....leave small portion in bottle put near sink...or wherever they go....they love wine ..fly in and drown.... got rid of mine very quickly

I tried something similar and it worked well except it seemed to attract way more insects than the few I would find most days they seemed to be coming from miles around so stopped doing that.
