DIY enthusiast’s renovation hack that saved her HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS gets slammed online over safety concerns

When it comes to choosing a kitchen splashback, there are many different options available on the market.

However, not all splashbacks are created equal. While some splashbacks may be made from materials that are resistant to heat and water, others may not be as durable.

As such, it is important to choose a splashback material that will be able to withstand the rigours of your kitchen.

However, for one DIY enthusiast, this rather unconventional item was her go-to material for her kitchen splashback.

A British renovator, better known for her Instagram username @mrslhome, took to social media to share how she saved hundreds of dollars on the splashback she was planning to place in her kitchen by opting for a much cheaper Ikea mirror.

"Ikea mirror hack – saving £578 ($881). Want a fancy splashback but don't want to spend the money? I honestly think this was such a good idea of mine!" the woman wrote in the caption of her video.

"We have an induction hob so wouldn't recommend it if you had a gas hob! This is called the LETTAN mirror from Ikea which cost us £22 ($33)."

However, Instagram users were quick to call out the woman for her "seemingly dangerous" tip, saying that using the mirror instead of a splashback may pose some risks in the long run. (Yikes!)

One person wrote: "The reason it costs more than £22 to do the job properly is because; it would be heat resistant glass, would fit the space and would be safely secured. Don't try this at home!"

"I have a mirror behind my cooker and it is tempered to be able to withstand the heat. Putting a normal mirror behind your cooker is dangerous… don't recommend it at all," another added.

Others pointed out that there are a lot more issues about the setup other than the heat.

"OK, firstly, not heat resistant. Secondly, going to have to constantly clean it, thirdly, who wants to look at themselves cooking?!" one person asked.

Meanwhile, one user, who claimed to be an expert on splashback safety issues, debunked the concerns surrounding heat. However, she pointed out other underlying issues.

"I work for a splashback company, using a non-toughened mirror behind an induction hob is probably OK. However, as you rightly mentioned it is not secured correct, and it doesn't have a foil backing in the event of breakage. This is not recommended people, please do not try this at home," the user said.

When it comes to kitchen safety, there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing and installing a splashback, according to experts.

First, make sure the splashback is made of a material that is heat resistant and easy to clean. Glass or ceramic tiles are good choices, while a mirror (as the DIY enthusiast suggests) is not a good material for this setup.

Second, the splashback should be installed so that it extends at least six inches above the stovetop and is flush with the countertop. This will help prevent grease and spills from splashing onto the wall behind the stove.

Finally, consider installing a backsplash guard to catch any splatters and make cleanup easier.

While the "hack" received backlash, one user defended the tip, saying that they had been using mirrors as a splashback themselves.

"Love it. We did the same. It's been three years now and not so much as a crack."

Others praised the woman for her "inventive" tip.

"What a great idea – it looks fabulous!!" one user said.

Well, it seems like some people go to great lengths just to save a few dollars despite the possible risks that these choices may incur. We love a money-saving tip, but never at the expense of safety.

We admit that we are not experts in this field so we cannot give you expert insight but we firmly recommend refraining from trying this hack.

Is this budget-friendly kitchen "hack" actually worth the risk? We don't think so!

How about you? What are your thoughts on this?
