'It started as grey shoe cabinets, but I wanted colour and a thin cabinet to “land” on when I came inside.'

Her post attracted more than 50,000 likes and 3,800 comments from those wanting to know exactly how she did it.

To pull it all together, she used three Hemnes cabinets from IKEA as the base.

'I used three Hemnes cabinets that I attached together, then added a 2x10x10 piece of wood to the top,' the woman explained.

After 'lots of sanding and painting', she successfully created a custom piece that looks like something from the pages of a high-end home décor magazine.

She also had the beautiful green hue colour-matched by a hardware store. The woman also replaced the silver handles with new ones to top off her project.

Many expressed their love for the woman’s tip, with one saying: 'I absolutely love this!'

'Fabulous vision and execution to a beautiful furniture piece.'

Another added: 'Love it! Really well done, and I adore the green colour! It’s my accent colour in my home also!'

IKEA cabinets are popular for its practicality, style, and its space-saving features, with some designs perfect for narrow hallways or garage spaces.

This cabiner is sold at $249 each. The extra detail added through the DIY tip has completely transformed the cabinet to a luxury piece for just below $1000.

Some shared the updated furniture did not look anything like the original piece with one saying the woman did a 'great job of transforming it'.

'Love it! Great job. Thanks for the inspiration. Been thinking of doing something similar,' another replied.

But that’s not all—the HEMNES cabinets are not only for storing shoes, they also reportedly come in handy for storing reusable shopping bags, dog leads, and even towels in the bathroom.

'Absolutely love this “shoe” cabinet for all my knick-knacks. It makes great underwear, socks storage and also storage for towels. It is nice and slim and looks so stylish. I am buying another one for my hallway,' one shared.

I don’t usually like green furniture but I like the colour and the cabinet also😁

Clearly I have a very different interpretation of 'high end'. It still looks like an Ikea knock together piece of furniture only designed to last as long as the fashion does. Much like fast fashion, made to put out on the nature strip or hard rubbish collection once it starts to fall apart.
