Discover these subtle tricks to keep your wardrobe organised

If your wardrobe looks like it could do with a good old-fashioned clear-out—don’t worry, you’re not alone. Sometimes, tidying our wardrobes and organising our clothes just happen to be way down on our list of priorities.

In fact, some people have settled into ‘floor-robe’—a term used to describe a wardrobe so messy most clothes live on the floor rather than inside it.

But you don’t have to make radical changes to make a difference. We have a few subtle tips from a stylist that won’t require too much time or energy—but will ensure that your wardrobe looks neater and it’s easier to find the clothes you’re looking for.

1. Introducing the ‘wardrobe chair’

A great way of getting your wardrobe into shape is to get yourself a chair or a stool and keep it in your bedroom.

When you’ve taken something out of your wardrobe, place it on the chair instead of letting it fall on the floor. Anything you can wear again, like something you’ve just taken out of the washing machine, should be kept on the chair rather than on your bedroom floor.

When you have some extra time and decide to organise your wardrobe, all you have to do is gather up the clothes sitting on the chair. Bundle them together, and you can easily move them into your wardrobe or drawers all in one go.

2. Adding baskets

Sometimes, we don’t have the time to neatly fold our clothes and stack them in our wardrobe.

To help with keeping your clothes organised, it’s a good idea to get yourself a few baskets to place on your wardrobe shelves. Separate your clothes into types (tops, pants, skirts, etc.) and place them in a basket. Any time you need to get dressed, grab the whole basket and sort through it at your leisure.

3. Getting rid of old and ill-fitting clothes

I know this can feel like a daunting task, but it’s important. Going through your wardrobe and identifying what pieces of clothing genuinely don’t fit, you haven’t worn in years, or you just don’t suit anymore will make it much easier to keep your wardrobe organised.

As a rule of thumb, once you’ve done a thorough clean-out, make sure to part ways with any item of clothing you’ve not worn for the past two years. That way, you’ll always ensure that your wardrobe is home to clothes you love to wear!

4. No more ironing

When it comes to hung-up items of clothing, ditch ironing—it can be time-consuming. Instead, hang it right out of the washing machine and, once it’s dry, hang it back in your wardrobe.

This way, you’ll avoid a row of crumpled pieces in your wardrobe—an all-around win if you ask me.

5. Drawers, drawers, and drawers

As lovely as wardrobe shelves look, they don’t always help us stay organised.

Having a neat set of drawers instead is a great way to maximise storage and keep your clothes tidy.

You don't need to fold clothes in that perfect origami style when storing clothes in your drawers. As long as you know where to find things, that’s all that matters!

6. Putting socks inside your shoes

This is an oldie but a goodie: When you’ve finished your laundry, shove a corresponding pair of socks in each pair of shoes. That way, whenever you find yourself in a rush, you’ll be able to locate a matching pair of socks in a matter of seconds.

7. Keeping a laundry basket nearby

Keep your laundry basket as close to your wardrobe as possible. This way, you can easily chuck all your dirty washing into the basket later.

Remember: tidying up your wardrobe isn’t a race, and what works for you might not work for someone else.

Don't forget when parting with clothes you no longer want to keep......think of donating them to the Salvos or other thrift shops that take recyclable clothing......there are lots of people out in the community who can't afford new clothes and you might put a smile on someone's face with your old clothes.

I have a laundry hamper in the ensuite for the washing. I have tubs for different things as I have open shelves in the robe. It's not hard to put straight in. Floor has never been a dumping ground. Why make a stack and then have to move it- double handling.

Have just had a big wardrobe overhaul, have 3 large bags of clothes for the op shop. Some new with tags on that I ordered online and didn’t like. As for putting socks in a pair of shoes just how many pairs of shoes does the average person have, I’m sure people have many more pairs of socks than shoes, so be easier to put pairs of socks together in a drawer or basket. I have given up folding underwear and nightwear, I just scrunch them up and put in the drawer.

Oh dear, I must be a fuss pot, I do hang things on hangers on the line, but some still need ironing
I don't dump clothes on the floor. .Just tossing things in baskets achieves nothing, when you take them out they are all wrinkled and need ironing.
IMO so much easier to fold, hang and put away straight away and much quicker.
So many people I know have so much mess around their home, complaining about how long it will take to clean up, which would not have been a problem if they just cleaned up and put away as they went.
