Discover the travel essentials flight attendants swear by

Travelling with just a carry-on bag might seem like a daunting task, especially with liquid restrictions and limited space to consider.

So when it comes to smart packing for air travel, there’s no better guide than the ultimate frequent flyers themselves—flight attendants.

These professionals have mastered the art of packing effectively for every trip, ensuring they’re prepared for any scenario, without being weighed down by unnecessary baggage.

Air New Zealand flight attendants were asked about the items in their carry-on bags—including items they would never leave their home without.

Christchurch-based Flight Attendant Verity Rice, who spends most of her waking hours in the air, shared her indispensable in-flight item.

Her first rule?

Never fly without mints or some type of breath-freshening agent, particularly one that is not gum, to avoid inner-ear discomfort due to excessive chewing during flights.

Rice added that a dash of perfume or cologne goes a long way in keeping you feeling fresh on those long-haul flights.

Below are other reliable items you will find in her carry-on bag:

'Some crew are a lot more organised with essentials for reapplying makeup and brushing their teeth and hair should an unscheduled overnight occur,' she said.

'I'm not that organised, but it's a wise move!'

Former Flight Attendant turned Trainee Pilot Kate Thompson shared that she always travels with headphones and an e-reader 'so I can just sit and read for a while if there are any delays'.

Thompson also packs a spare set of clothes, makeup, toiletries, and her high-visibility jacket in case she has to spend an unexpected night somewhere.

Furthermore, Ben Whatman, who has flown with the airline since 2014, goes the extra mile and packs a few unusual but useful items such as lens cleaner, face mist, eye spray, and his travel wallet.

'Your eyes can also get dry and irritated. I always make sure to pack Optrex ActiMist, which is especially great for contact lens wearers like me.'

Similar to ground workers, flight attendants also bring packed lunch.

According to Rice, she typically gets a salad from a takeout restaurant or brings leftovers from the previous night. She also shared that instant oatmeal and homemade smoothies are great options when she’s in a hurry.

Furthermore, Rice added that muesli bowls with yoghurt and fruit are quite popular among the crew.

One tip for passengers is to pack a sachet of instant oats and ask cabin crew for some hot water—this will come out much cheaper than buying a $20 breakfast at the airport.
