Discover the 'secret' rule to secure the best seats on your next flight!

Ah, air travel. Despite its many perks and benefits, many travellers aren't fond of it—from arriving at the airport to seeing where you're sitting on the plane (which can also mean battling for space in the overhead lockers).

But if you know what to look for beforehand, you can go from jostling for elbow room to settling into luxurious spaciousness before even boarding the flight!

For Qantas passengers, what you need to know is the 'secret' T-80 rule.

It's a little-known trick that allows passengers to reserve the 'best seats on the plane'; a great way to get a bit of added comfort on your flight without having to pay extra.

So what is the 'secret' Qantas T-80 rule, and how does it work?

Although not an official rule, the 'T-80 rule' refers to the 80-hour mark before departure. Here's how it operates: inspect the flight seat map 80 hours before the scheduled departure.

While it's not a sure thing, in most cases, any empty blocked seats in the aircraft become available to everyone. This includes the sought-after Row 4 on Qantas Boeing 737s, known for its great legroom right behind Business Class.

If these seats are open, you can easily pick your new seats and confirm your choices. It's important to note that Qantas does have the right to reassign seats based on operational needs, but it's worth giving a try.

To determine when these seats are released, just subtract 80 hours from your departure time. In practice, this means counting back three full days (72 hours) and then subtracting an additional 8 hours.

For example, if your flight departs at 12:35 pm on a Saturday, go back three days to 12:35 pm on Wednesday. Then, subtract 8 hours, which lands you at 4:35 am on Wednesday.

By doing this, you just may score yourself a front-row spot or a more spacious seat.

The scheme also gives other passengers, regardless of their membership status, a great opportunity to get the same luxurious experience at no extra cost.

As one woman reported on Facebook, 'Plenty of legroom on our A330-200 to Melbourne, row 23, thanks to the T-80 rule! My first flight as a Frequent Flyer.'

Another person shared that they managed to secure a front-row economy seat for their flight from Perth to Sydney. Meanwhile, a third traveller mentioned how they were upgraded from row 26 to row 5.

'It does work!' he said.

Key Takeaways

  • Qantas airline has the T-80 rule that allows passengers to select a better seat that was previously unavailable 80 hours before the flight.
  • Unclaimed spots, often at the front of the plane and reserved for those with elite memberships, are released for other passengers to grab.
  • This rule allows passengers to score seats with more legroom or at the front of the plane.
  • Re-selecting a seat under the T-80 rule doesn't incur an extra fee, though this rule is unpredictable, and the released seats are usually snapped up quickly.

Keep in mind that re-selecting your seat under the T-80 rule won't cost any extra. You may see a few of the better seats marked unavailable, but you never know; you may get lucky and get a good one.
