Discover the 'life-changing' Coles product this mum used to banish stubborn shower screen soap scum

Do you ever look at your shower screen and wish you could eliminate all the soap scum?

Bathrooms, and showers, in particular, can sometimes be quite hard to maintain, and build-up of dirt can be a real nuisance if it's not taken care of properly.

One mum recently discovered the solution to this problem, and it has caught the attention of the online cleaning community.

She had been trying various approaches to get her bathroom sparkling again. She has tried using vinegar and dishwashing liquid, as well as specialised soap scum and mould removers, but she was still not satisfied with the results.

That is until she heard about a product from popular supermarket giant Coles.

The Coles Ultra Cream Cleanser costs just $3, a fraction of the cost of her usual name-brand cleaner.

She decided to give it a go, and the woman was 'blown away' with the outcome.

After carefully applying the product to her shower screen, she gently scrubbed it with a green scourer and then rinsed it. Her screen was shining once more!

She shared the outcome on social media, writing: ‘Wow, I am so happy.'

The cleaning group was so impressed with her efforts that people started commenting on how 'divine' her shower looked.

Another user shared that they now use supermarket home brands for cleaning as compared to more established brands: ‘I have discovered most work better than those four times the price. I will never go back.'

However, one warning came with the compliments: 'Be very careful as the green scourer will scratch your glass.’

She also received other handy tips from other members of the group, who mentioned that it's better to avoid using soap altogether and switch instead to shower gel.

Effects of Soap Scum on Health & Hygiene

Soap scum isn't just a villain to the aesthetic beauty of our bathrooms, it is also a potential risk to our health and hygiene. It’s a dreaded reality that soap scum build-up can lead to the growth of harmful microorganisms.

As soap scum accumulates on your shower screen, it creates a high pH environment–a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, fungi and other potential pathogens. These uninvited guests are often invisible, slyly hiding in the cracks and crevices of your soap-scum-covered shower.

Moreover, soap scum may trap skin particles, hair, and other bodily debris, providing more feast for these microbes.

Exposure to these microbes through touching or inhaling them can sometimes lead to skin irritations or respiratory issues, particularly for those with sensitive skin or allergies. While these health risks are not dire, they can add an unnecessary nuisance to your life.

Cleaning aficionados also inform us that those nasty pink or greyish stains often seen in unclean showers are colonies of bacteria.

With this in mind, taming your soap scum situation becomes a task not just of aesthetics but certainly also of health.

Keeping in line with the preventative mantra, remember to always rinse your shower thoroughly after use. This helps minimise the build-up of soap and other residues, thus reducing the likelihood of soap scum.

But, if the soap scum has made an unwelcome appearance, rest assured that products like Coles’ Ultra Cream Cleanser are here to take on the scum off.

I find a lot of Coles brand cheaper cleaners do a really good job.

The build-up of soap scum is caused by using bar soap, I find since using liquid soap I don't have that problem. A one-litre bottle lasts me at least a year.

Also, using products with SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) will also result in leaving the residue. There is some talk that SLS is primarily used to create the foam that so many people like in soap. I don't think it's the best thing for the skin either.
I have never used any shampoo or soap that contains SLS, and since moving into my home over 8 years ago, have never had soap scum of the glass. There are lots of products out there without SLS. The word must be out there.
As well as avoiding SLS, I always quickly microfibre the water off the glass and tiles before I leave the shower area. So, have never had to give the tiles a scrub either.
I don't know if things can be fixed doing this if the scum is already there, but if one is going to put in a new bathroom, it's a good habit to get into. Some folk opt to squeegee instead of wipe, but I find that takes a little longer.
Every person has their own routine and if it saves them time, then go for it. I like the approach of prevention being better than cure.

Bought the product and tried it, and it's overrated, Gumption kills it.
I wonder if people get paid to push certain products on the market.
