Discover the clever trick one Woolies shopper used to score 13 lamb cutlets for $6.90 - and you can too!

When it comes to shopping for groceries, the aim is often to score the best bang for your buck. And it turns out there’s a clever trick one savvy shopper was able to use to help them do just that at Woolworths. The trick led to them buying 13 lamb cutlets for the bargain price of just $6.90.

The woman shared her incredible find on a popular Facebook group called Markdown Addicts Australia, posting a picture of her packet of lamb 'offcuts', which turned out to be 13 'perfectly good' lamb cutlets.

'Pretty happy with my ‘offcuts’ of 13 lamb cutlets at Woolworths!' she captioned the post.

The packet of lamb offcuts cost the shopper $6.90, while an equivalent amount of lamb cutlets at Woolies are priced around $43 per kilo. The find was praised by fellow group members, who were very impressed with the woman’s budget win.

'Bargain,' one person wrote.

'I’ve seen actual lamb cutlets with less meat,' another said.

'Wow that’s an incredible buy, good for you,' a third wrote.

But while the offcuts can offer a great deal, many members of the Facebook group were unsure of how to cook them.

'Sorry to sound silly but what would you use the offcuts for?' one person asked.

Many members replied, saying they buy lamb offcuts for their pets or to make a stew.

As I am sure many of you may know, the cooking options for lamb offcuts are pretty vast. While the offcuts are a great budget-friendly, nutritious option for pet food, they are also more than fit for human consumption. You can use them for anything from casseroles and stews to curries and even kebabs – it all just depends on personal preference and cooking style.

One of our favourite comments on the post was from one woman who shared an old recipe she still follows using lamb offcuts for a casserole.

‘A really good, very old recipe from the “Campbell Soup can of soup recipe book” from the 80’s,’ she wrote in the comments. And the recipe she shared? We thought it might be one very familiar to many of you.

Ingredients
1 can of Campbell’s cream of celery soup
Chopped onion
1/2 - 1 cup of frozen peas
A couple of sticks of celery with leaves (sticks from the middle of the bunch)
6-8 smaller potatoes, peeled and quartered
Lamb offcuts (fat cut off)
Plain flour for dusting lamb
Chicken stock to cover all the ingredients
Cornflour for thickening

Method
  1. Dust the lamb offcuts with plain flour.
  2. Place in a slow cooker (on high) or in a lightly sprayed casserole dish, oven set to 180 degrees Celsius.
  3. Add chopped onion, celery, potatoes, stock and a can of soup. Mix lightly and then cook. Stir a couple of times while cooking.
  4. When finished, stick a sharp knife into the meat/potato; if cooked, it will be tender and moist.
  5. Mix about 1/4 cup cornflour with water until it’s mixed, no lumps, and smooth. (The amount of Cornflour to be used depends on the amount of liquid in the pot). Add slowly to the slow cooker or casserole dish as you stir constantly. DO NOT pour the cornflour in without stirring as you pour slowly otherwise, you’ll have a gluggy mess at the bottom, and your dish will be wrecked.
  6. Serve as is over a bed of mashed potato.

Oh, members! This recipe takes me back to the lamb casserole my beautiful grandma used to make for us as a treat here and there. Her mashed potatoes were by far the best I’ve ever had!

So, if you’re looking to pick up a good deal, always keep an eye out for the offcuts and trimmings section at your local Woolworths, Coles, IGA or ALDI, and get creative with your cooking. And, of course, let us know in the comments below if you have any tips or recipes to share when cooking with offcuts!

In the photo there are carrots, beans, what appears to be tomatoes, and a bay leaf, but none of this is mentioned in the recipe ingredients. I also do not see any potatoes or celery, that is mentioned. Is there anything else we should know about, or is the photo of something else completely?

Yum, I buy lamb off cuts when I can find any, I think they are becoming more sought after than they used to be. I use them for soups, stews and casseroles, they cook up really tender in the crockpot.

I often look through the packs of lamb offcuts to see if they’re worth buying, and sometimes they are. However, I’ve noticed even these are going up in price. They used to be $3-odd and now most packs are over $6.
Hello @Thecheesequeen! How do you check if lamb offcuts are good to go? Is there anything specific you look out for? :D

Hello @Gil! Sorry for the confusion, it appears it's a stock image :)

And i noticed that too, where are the potatoes! Definitely needed in a stew!

Yes, saw this FB Post and the lamb cutlets that this lucky lady got. i now often check the lamb Off Cut packets but haven't purchased a packet yet. Woollies use to charge $4.00 p/kilo and now it's $9.00 p/k. I'm thinking that it's better to wait for legs of lamb to be on sale $12.00 p/k and then also utilise my Woollies Extra Rewards 'once a month 10% Off discount' and then it will be $10.80 p/kilo and cut up and make own lamb chops, etc.. not unless I see a great Off-Cuts packet like this lady. If 10% off as well at the time, then even better.

The Woolworth's Extra Rewards is well-worth the $59.00 annual fees. I may not have saved as much as a family being single shopping, but I sure have saved and the $59 annual fees have already paid for themselves. I did a big shop the other day for my April 10% Off and got just over $35. off my grocery bill. I purchased a lot of cat food, the Fussy Cat Grainfree on sale $1.90 a tin and Dine 7x packs on sale $6.00. With the 10% off these they went down to $1.51 a tin and $5.40 Dine pack of 7x. Plus, got 5 tins of Nescafe 43 coffee large tins on sale $17 but with 10% off I got them for $15.30 a tin. They expire in February 2025.

I've never seen offcuts sold. These would be excellent for soup.
Or cooking in a slow cooker
Look in the lamb section in Woolworths. They are in packets and can be hard to find or simply sold out. Try next to the legs of lamb. They do not make it easy to find. I always have trouble finding their sausage mince. It's nearly always never there.

I'm thinking she has not taken a photo of what she cooked so found a picture close to what she thought . I'm thinking the actual recipe will be more of a creamy colour with the cream of celery soup and chicken stock. The recipe in photo would have crushed tomatoes, tomato paste and I would say beef stock rather than chicken and possibly a touch of red wine

They are there but sell quickly and many times not worth buying. In the Woolworth's Lamb section. Have a good look for the word Off Cuts and sell for $9.00 p/kilo. They use to sell the off-cuts for $4.00 p/k about 1-2 years ago. I have only seen it a couple of times myself and did not buy as not enough funds. However, I'll try again and when I have the Woolworth's Extra rewards 10% off per month. The Extra Rewards $59 annual fees has been worth every cent. Plus, you get extra points. Plus, extra offers to earn extra points and one free item per month worth about $2-$3. I saved just over $35 this month on a big shop, mainly cat food on sale plus I got two rolls of paper towels worth $1.80. So, just in April I saved $37. The $59 pays for itself. Plus, you also get a separate 10% off once a month at Big W. Like many, I wait for the sales to utilise the 10% off and get the best I can.

I'm going to see if the lamb legs go on sale again for $12.00 p/k when I need to use my 10% off. This way the lam legs will be $10.80 p/kilo. I can then cut it up myself for other meals. Maybe even buy two lam legs, one for roasting and the other for cutting up and making other meals. Plus, if the off-cuts are a good packet, buy 1-2 of these with the 10% off. That means it will be $8.10 p/kilo instead of $9.00 p/kilo.
